ELLA VVINTER INTERVIEVVS
Tito Reveais
By Kila VVinter
(Yesterda Miss Winter began
the textual report of the first
intcrview given by Marshal Tito
to an American reporter this year
The intervievv was conducted in
German vvithout interpreters at
the Marehal's villa in Zagreb The
questions and the ansvvers vvcre
frank and without the usual diplo-mati- c
evasions The conctuiion of
the intervievv opena on a (juestion
by mee Winter)
Since there ia so much miaun-derstandi- ng
regarding your oppo--
sltion I vvonder if you'd explain
to me vhat the opposition heilu
conaiats of In America our big
parties differ politely— or maybe
impolitely— but at any rate over
the dinner table or on redio or
at the polis Why do you take such
atrong measures against your op-position
? This is one of the things
that shocks American opinion
A Our oppoaitionists are ene-mies
of the state enemies of the
new Yugoslavia They have stop-pe-d
at no measures to overthrow
our country including espionagc
sabotage and murder to enforcs
their opposition Those vvho are
vrilling to live in peace like Grol
Shubasich and others vve do not
proceed against but those vvho
continue acting to overthrow the
government —especially with for-cig- n
support —we take energetic
measures to stop Don't you do
the same with the enemies of youi
country? Take the cxample now
of Slovenia this last trial at
Ljubljana in vhirh Nagoda and
Furlan are shovvn up This oppo-sition
doesn't just disagree over
n dinner table it use espionnge
and economic terrorism as it
vreapons They give away military
seerets And anvono who spreads
lles about our state vve consldcr
enemies too Such lles have done
us groat damages ospecially vith
foreign countries
Q HOW DO VOU ACCOUNT
for the fact that forelgn coun-tries
and cspecially their official
government do get aceording to
j-o-u
such a false pkture of this
arantry? '
A Hl givo you an cxamp!e as j
an answer The Manchester Guar-dian
rccently published a long
editorial—or vvas it an article I
have forgotten vvhich — saying that
the Chetniks vere fighting in Bos-ni- a
and Herzegovina vvere form-in- g
a new army of 20000 men
vvhich vvas blowing up bridges
tralns and factories Novv you've
seen personallj vvhat goes on here
you've seen that no such thing
ia occurring There are Just a
few hundred men vvho have not
yet been unmasked the rest have
fled We consider an article like
that to have been vvritten vvith
the intent of making trouble it
constitutes a method of encourag-in- g
the very tcrroristic acts it
describes Or it may be that the
paper's correspondent vvas deliber-atel- y
misinformed by enemies
Q What vvould happen Mar-shal
Tito if such terroristic bandi
wero formed?
A They vvould be vdped out
Q Why ara forelgn pswers or
aa you call them "certain foreign
p9we" hoatile to Vugoslavia?
A If a small atate like oura doea
vhat we have done it seta an ex-amp- le
for other states that are not
yet indepenlent as for example
ome colonial countriee Vfe are
a nw economic democracy vhkh

the dog grumbled like a baby I

head hopefully to me and licked

Tiger was appeased and lay down

THE MARSHAL
Vugoslavia's Secref Weapon
i unit and the unitv of our peo- -
ple We hae used ali our ener- -
gies to build up and bind up the
vrounds of war This is also a sign
that there is no var atmosphere
A people that puts forth such
efforts to reconitruet cansot bo
thinking of war only of peace
only of peace
Q I HAVE NOTICED that ali
your new buildings have such
atrong vvalla such thkk founda-tion- s
as if they were being built
for eternity! Why is that?
A Yes and vve build our fac--
tories out in the open as you hav
seen vve are not hidlng them
Does a country build factories thus
out in the open if it expects war
or courts war?
Q Dut if an atomic bomb vvere
to ba dropped on these factories?
Tito interrupted with heartfelt
laughter
A We an not afraid of the
atom bomb We can defend our-selv- es
We have a secret
Q WIIAT IS IT— May I ask?
A It i our morale Factories
arent everything One can achieve
Herostratus destruetion (a Greek
who destroycd a temple for the
sheer šake of destruetion) witli
the atom bomb but one cannot de-str- oy
a people
Q Then rou think war is im-possib- le
now?
A For the present yes You
can't fight a vvar vvithout the peo-lJ- e
bcing villlng and people at
present are unvvilllng even in your
country Don't forget that the
Nazis vvere the strongeet military
power the wor!d has cver knovvn
and they vvere the aggressors
They had much the strongest vvea-po- ns
yct they vvere utterly de-strov- ed
Evcry aggressor must lose
— and aggressors we shall never
bc Dut for our defense ve shall
fight particularly if our country
is attacked We vant nothing
from anyone Ve have made such
sacrifices vve knov vvhat var is
Vugoslavia lost 300000 soldiers
a"d 1500000 dvilians-ever- y tenth
or eleventh man woman and ehild
This is a much greater sacrifice in
proportion than vas made by the
United States Can you imagine
that vvc want war onco more?
Q OUH STATE DEl'AHT-JIEN'- T
implies that you may have
the illegal Greek underground ra-dio
statlon here Is it true?
A It is an invention Why
should it be here? Any help from
us to the Greeks vvould take quite
different forms we have ?ym-path- y
and support for their as-piratio- ns
Q I would like to ask you some-thin- g
about your industrialization
lans If the $60000000 blocked
Idollars of yours which the United
States still holds vvere releastd
how would you use them?
A To buy machinery tractors
and trucka in the United States
Q You sald in your Tanjug in-tervi- ew
of Aug 7 that America
should leave you alone Doea not
that amack of ieolationiam and
would you approve of an isolation-is- t
attitude on the part of the
United States tovard you?
A I meant don't make diffi-culti- ea
for us don't stop our re-conatruet- ion
We watt cconomic
and trade relatkma with you but
if you don't want them then leave
us alone
Q What about the Vugoelav
miasion nov negotlatlng in Lon-don?
A (Smilifig) lt's goisg through
Weve better relatiene vdth Eng-lan- d
Q Why is that?
A England galns aad we gain
Q How ia it in yor opinion
that England and France vhich
have great dollar Ioan are not
reconstrueting as much or as fast
as Vugoslavia who reeeived noth-ing
from the United States?
A THERE IS ANOTHEK SEC-IJE- T
We ue everythtng the
minute we get it We w"ork very
wett we a#e every otmee of ma-teri- al
evry nail—for the benefit
ofalL
Q Marahal Tito it is still a
myatry to me how yoy have man-age- d yor rMonairoction It as-tonis- hea
an American used to
serapers and gradera btflldoters
eranes tractors ateamrollers
cement mineru to pee vrhat you
have done almost without maehin-- 1
ery You have rebuilt more and
more quickly than any European
' country that I have seen this
summer—and I have travelled ali
through Central Europe Hov did
it happen? (In Yugoslavia bulld-ing- s
bridges factories railroads
seem to spring up almost ovei-nig- ht
The buildings are of thick
cement and double brick not jerry
built or shoddy)
A Our economic svstem is such
that ve can make such progres
In the Vest privato ovnership
stopa auch progresa Here no one
puts anything in hia private
pocket
Q If you dld get private loans
and credJta eould that tend to
stop your reconstruetion ?
A (laughing) Of course not
If we get cash or loans we would
simply buy mora machines for
the good of ali
Q WILL YOU EXrLAIN to
me in detail and concretely why
you refused to participate in the
Marshall Tlan?
A You see that we were not
wrong The Pariš Conference has
como to no result vre said it could
not The secret conference about
the Iluhr now taking place in Eng-land
is further proof that some-thin- g
i wrong somewhere that
somevvhere there's a lack of good-wi- ll
that not evcry state can ex-pe- ct
help—least of ali our country
We have our Five Year Plan we
havo built amazingly in these past
two years ve can simply not per-m- it
any obstruction I vill cite you
an example: Aceording to the Mar-shall
Plan every country must put
its surplus into a common pot llut
ve cannot do this: we already have
agreements trade and economic
agreements with many countries:
Sveden Italy Uulgaria Hungarj
Poland Komania and Czechoslova-ki- a
We vouldn't be free to
have these under the Marshall
Plan We knev this so we deelin-e- d
to go to Pariš Desides they did
the who!e thlng without consulting
us beforehand We vere Just told
to come Ono doesn't do things like
that
Q I think Americans would be
interested in knowing why it is
so important for you a hitherto
largelv agricultural countrj" to
becomo industrialized?
A It is very important We are
a rich country Why should we
export mlnerals for example?
They belong to our country ve
should use them for the benefit
of our people We have many
riches in our country: oil coal
copper 2inc lead manganese
We sould work these ourselves and
benefit from them ourselves Why
export cheap raw materials and
buy back expensive finished pro-duet- s?
Why should our peasants
have to emigrate because thi
country is poor —one and a half
million have left home and spread
over the entire vorld in order to
make a better living than they
could make here We have too little
earth for our populatlon unless ve
tili and vork it intensively Why
should our peasants go away?
Q I understand 500 immigrants
have just arrived from Canada—
Vugoslava coming back to their
homeland?
A Theee are "ecosomk immi-grant- a"
(They are largely skilled
labor and have brought a half mi-llion
dollara' worth of toola with
them)
Q What about your polky re-garding
D P's?
A We vvant our people back of
course Those vvho are not var
criminals can vrork here peaceful-l- y
Ve have amnestied ali ho
veren't bloodstained criminals It
is enemy propaganda to teli them
that things are bad here and that
they vvill be punished if they re-tu- rn
This is not true And many
have already returned and have
seen that it vas untrue We need
workers we have no unemploy-men- t
here nor can ve ever bave
any (Tito asked me why Amer-icans
didn't come to work on the
Vouth Railvay as practkally
every other nationality had done)
Q You have spoken much
Marshal Tito of the lies you al-le- ge
are told about you Do you
think such alleged lies can con-tinue
in the face of ali these
things you have toM me wheh
you feel refute them?
A The lies can't continue long
After awhile lies are denied by
fact and we show the facts Vet
some do remain and as I've said
do damage Ve teli the facts and
repeat them but sections of your
prese are very powerful and are
in the hands of people who vvant

| OCR text | STRANA 4 NOVOSTI Četvrtak 16 oktobra 1947 ELLA VVINTER INTERVIEVVS Tito Reveais By Kila VVinter (Yesterda Miss Winter began the textual report of the first intcrview given by Marshal Tito to an American reporter this year The intervievv was conducted in German vvithout interpreters at the Marehal's villa in Zagreb The questions and the ansvvers vvcre frank and without the usual diplo-mati- c evasions The conctuiion of the intervievv opena on a (juestion by mee Winter) Since there ia so much miaun-derstandi- ng regarding your oppo-- sltion I vvonder if you'd explain to me vhat the opposition heilu conaiats of In America our big parties differ politely— or maybe impolitely— but at any rate over the dinner table or on redio or at the polis Why do you take such atrong measures against your op-position ? This is one of the things that shocks American opinion A Our oppoaitionists are ene-mies of the state enemies of the new Yugoslavia They have stop-pe-d at no measures to overthrow our country including espionagc sabotage and murder to enforcs their opposition Those vvho are vrilling to live in peace like Grol Shubasich and others vve do not proceed against but those vvho continue acting to overthrow the government —especially with for-cig- n support —we take energetic measures to stop Don't you do the same with the enemies of youi country? Take the cxample now of Slovenia this last trial at Ljubljana in vhirh Nagoda and Furlan are shovvn up This oppo-sition doesn't just disagree over n dinner table it use espionnge and economic terrorism as it vreapons They give away military seerets And anvono who spreads lles about our state vve consldcr enemies too Such lles have done us groat damages ospecially vith foreign countries Q HOW DO VOU ACCOUNT for the fact that forelgn coun-tries and cspecially their official government do get aceording to j-o-u such a false pkture of this arantry? ' A Hl givo you an cxamp!e as j an answer The Manchester Guar-dian rccently published a long editorial—or vvas it an article I have forgotten vvhich — saying that the Chetniks vere fighting in Bos-ni- a and Herzegovina vvere form-in- g a new army of 20000 men vvhich vvas blowing up bridges tralns and factories Novv you've seen personallj vvhat goes on here you've seen that no such thing ia occurring There are Just a few hundred men vvho have not yet been unmasked the rest have fled We consider an article like that to have been vvritten vvith the intent of making trouble it constitutes a method of encourag-in- g the very tcrroristic acts it describes Or it may be that the paper's correspondent vvas deliber-atel- y misinformed by enemies Q What vvould happen Mar-shal Tito if such terroristic bandi wero formed? A They vvould be vdped out Q Why ara forelgn pswers or aa you call them "certain foreign p9we" hoatile to Vugoslavia? A If a small atate like oura doea vhat we have done it seta an ex-amp- le for other states that are not yet indepenlent as for example ome colonial countriee Vfe are a nw economic democracy vhkh has already had great success i Tito'a voiee took fire and I strength but at this moment hkt great German hepherd dog Tiger famo ali over Europe sauntered teto the room making affectionate dog noises He queezed between U atxl against the Marshal's knee aaking for attention "Mir!" or-der- ed his master: "Quiet!" but the dog grumbled like a baby I patted him he turned his long head hopefully to me and licked y faec The Marehal laughed Tiger was appeased and lay down lietly at Tito's feet The dg oee belonged to a German Army offieer taken prisoner and was preaented to Tito in 1944 by Ger-er-al Košta Xadj he's about fix yeara oM beautifutly marked in black and brown almmt the site of a Great Dane A (ront) We are only a mali atate and we have a!redy achieved great succewns Our lad was terribly kstityed We have made such great ateps for-war- d in these few Tears we have rogrcaetd at a rate never učen before ia the wtrW under Mh cireamstanees It ia testlly mar-ve- l Ve dkl it through national "ilr THE MARSHAL Vugoslavia's Secref Weapon i unit and the unitv of our peo- - ple We hae used ali our ener- - gies to build up and bind up the vrounds of war This is also a sign that there is no var atmosphere A people that puts forth such efforts to reconitruet cansot bo thinking of war only of peace only of peace Q I HAVE NOTICED that ali your new buildings have such atrong vvalla such thkk founda-tion- s as if they were being built for eternity! Why is that? A Yes and vve build our fac-- tories out in the open as you hav seen vve are not hidlng them Does a country build factories thus out in the open if it expects war or courts war? Q Dut if an atomic bomb vvere to ba dropped on these factories? Tito interrupted with heartfelt laughter A We an not afraid of the atom bomb We can defend our-selv- es We have a secret Q WIIAT IS IT— May I ask? A It i our morale Factories arent everything One can achieve Herostratus destruetion (a Greek who destroycd a temple for the sheer šake of destruetion) witli the atom bomb but one cannot de-str- oy a people Q Then rou think war is im-possib- le now? A For the present yes You can't fight a vvar vvithout the peo-lJ- e bcing villlng and people at present are unvvilllng even in your country Don't forget that the Nazis vvere the strongeet military power the wor!d has cver knovvn and they vvere the aggressors They had much the strongest vvea-po- ns yct they vvere utterly de-strov- ed Evcry aggressor must lose — and aggressors we shall never bc Dut for our defense ve shall fight particularly if our country is attacked We vant nothing from anyone Ve have made such sacrifices vve knov vvhat var is Vugoslavia lost 300000 soldiers a"d 1500000 dvilians-ever- y tenth or eleventh man woman and ehild This is a much greater sacrifice in proportion than vas made by the United States Can you imagine that vvc want war onco more? Q OUH STATE DEl'AHT-JIEN'- T implies that you may have the illegal Greek underground ra-dio statlon here Is it true? A It is an invention Why should it be here? Any help from us to the Greeks vvould take quite different forms we have ?ym-path- y and support for their as-piratio- ns Q I would like to ask you some-thin- g about your industrialization lans If the $60000000 blocked Idollars of yours which the United States still holds vvere releastd how would you use them? A To buy machinery tractors and trucka in the United States Q You sald in your Tanjug in-tervi- ew of Aug 7 that America should leave you alone Doea not that amack of ieolationiam and would you approve of an isolation-is- t attitude on the part of the United States tovard you? A I meant don't make diffi-culti- ea for us don't stop our re-conatruet- ion We watt cconomic and trade relatkma with you but if you don't want them then leave us alone Q What about the Vugoelav miasion nov negotlatlng in Lon-don? A (Smilifig) lt's goisg through Weve better relatiene vdth Eng-lan- d Q Why is that? A England galns aad we gain Q How ia it in yor opinion that England and France vhich have great dollar Ioan are not reconstrueting as much or as fast as Vugoslavia who reeeived noth-ing from the United States? A THERE IS ANOTHEK SEC-IJE- T We ue everythtng the minute we get it We w"ork very wett we a#e every otmee of ma-teri- al evry nail—for the benefit ofalL Q Marahal Tito it is still a myatry to me how yoy have man-age- d yor rMonairoction It as-tonis- hea an American used to serapers and gradera btflldoters eranes tractors ateamrollers cement mineru to pee vrhat you have done almost without maehin-- 1 ery You have rebuilt more and more quickly than any European ' country that I have seen this summer—and I have travelled ali through Central Europe Hov did it happen? (In Yugoslavia bulld-ing- s bridges factories railroads seem to spring up almost ovei-nig- ht The buildings are of thick cement and double brick not jerry built or shoddy) A Our economic svstem is such that ve can make such progres In the Vest privato ovnership stopa auch progresa Here no one puts anything in hia private pocket Q If you dld get private loans and credJta eould that tend to stop your reconstruetion ? A (laughing) Of course not If we get cash or loans we would simply buy mora machines for the good of ali Q WILL YOU EXrLAIN to me in detail and concretely why you refused to participate in the Marshall Tlan? A You see that we were not wrong The Pariš Conference has como to no result vre said it could not The secret conference about the Iluhr now taking place in Eng-land is further proof that some-thin- g i wrong somewhere that somevvhere there's a lack of good-wi- ll that not evcry state can ex-pe- ct help—least of ali our country We have our Five Year Plan we havo built amazingly in these past two years ve can simply not per-m- it any obstruction I vill cite you an example: Aceording to the Mar-shall Plan every country must put its surplus into a common pot llut ve cannot do this: we already have agreements trade and economic agreements with many countries: Sveden Italy Uulgaria Hungarj Poland Komania and Czechoslova-ki- a We vouldn't be free to have these under the Marshall Plan We knev this so we deelin-e- d to go to Pariš Desides they did the who!e thlng without consulting us beforehand We vere Just told to come Ono doesn't do things like that Q I think Americans would be interested in knowing why it is so important for you a hitherto largelv agricultural countrj" to becomo industrialized? A It is very important We are a rich country Why should we export mlnerals for example? They belong to our country ve should use them for the benefit of our people We have many riches in our country: oil coal copper 2inc lead manganese We sould work these ourselves and benefit from them ourselves Why export cheap raw materials and buy back expensive finished pro-duet- s? Why should our peasants have to emigrate because thi country is poor —one and a half million have left home and spread over the entire vorld in order to make a better living than they could make here We have too little earth for our populatlon unless ve tili and vork it intensively Why should our peasants go away? Q I understand 500 immigrants have just arrived from Canada— Vugoslava coming back to their homeland? A Theee are "ecosomk immi-grant- a" (They are largely skilled labor and have brought a half mi-llion dollara' worth of toola with them) Q What about your polky re-garding D P's? A We vvant our people back of course Those vvho are not var criminals can vrork here peaceful-l- y Ve have amnestied ali ho veren't bloodstained criminals It is enemy propaganda to teli them that things are bad here and that they vvill be punished if they re-tu- rn This is not true And many have already returned and have seen that it vas untrue We need workers we have no unemploy-men- t here nor can ve ever bave any (Tito asked me why Amer-icans didn't come to work on the Vouth Railvay as practkally every other nationality had done) Q You have spoken much Marshal Tito of the lies you al-le- ge are told about you Do you think such alleged lies can con-tinue in the face of ali these things you have toM me wheh you feel refute them? A The lies can't continue long After awhile lies are denied by fact and we show the facts Vet some do remain and as I've said do damage Ve teli the facts and repeat them but sections of your prese are very powerful and are in the hands of people who vvant a&sstmmmmms&m Seljaci slavonskih sela dobrovoljno uključuju u obradu dijelove svojih pašnjaka Slavonska Orahovica — Na pod-ručju kotara Slavonska Orahovica koji ima CO sela i 23 MNO-- a pri-vode se kraju pripreme za pred-stojeću jesensku sjetvu Kotarska sjetvena komisija razradila je plan sjetve na mjesta dok Mjesni na-rodni odbori završavaju razrez na pojedine gospodare kojih ima 4C63 Pred vidjeno je da se u ovom kotaru zasije: pSenicom 41 posto raži i ječmom 5 posto parom zobi 11 posto krmnim stočnim biljem i industrijskim biljkama po 9 po-sto krumpirom i drugim povrćem 4 posto i s kukuruzom 21 posto obradivih površina Velečasni iz Nove Kapele osluškuje cvilenje Nova Kapela — Fino i ugladje- - no uho ima ovdašnji svećenik Josip GlavaJ Ne izbjegne njemu ni naj-manji Hum direktno bi čovjek re-kao da je muzički nadaren — pra-vi rtatfinvkn PrpvrA u na nri mier u krevetu i osluHcuJe Jutro je i narod ide s kolima na polje da t radi a točkovi nepodmazani — cvile "Sto bi to moglo biti — kakav je to cvileS?" pita se velečasni a onda nakon podugog razmišljanja zaključuje: "Nema ita — cvili narod" Ili prolazi kraj željezničke pru-ge Lokomotiva — rekao bi čovjek nova — a još Je nedavno ležala u starom gvoždju Izvukli je popra-vili — i sada vozi Ali kada stane — zastenje zaškripi "Kakav je to zvuk?' pomišlja velečasni "Ma i opet neki cvilež" I zaključuje: "Nema žta — cvili narod" I čuje on tako cvilenje sa svih strana — cvile strojevi u tvornica-ma cvile turbine u hidrocentrala-ma cvile vlakovi što već prolaze dovrSenlm dijelovima Omladinske pruge cvili vjetar kroz novograd-nje A Glavaš samo osluškuje pa primjećuje: "Nema šta — cvili narod" No jednog je dana čuo drug zvukove Nije cvilež — nego pjes-ma Omladinska priredba I to ga jo uzbunilo Eto već se tako pnu-či- o na cvilenje da se već i sam pretvorio u veliki cvilež a sada najednom pjesma I dugo je o to-me razmišljao zapeklo ga upravo ta odlučio zacviliti protiv toga j samoj propovijedi što je odlučio to je i učinio Iduće nedjelje kada se popeo na propovjedaonicu ucvi-ljenim glasom rekao je medju ostalim: "Sramota je to da omladina održava priredbe da se omladina veseli dok milijuni naroda — cvi-le" što ćemo — svatko sluša zvu-kove svojim uhom A veličasni Glavaš se toliko zacvilio da mu je već sve cvilež pa ucvilio i propo-vijed Samo što se malo rdjavo izrazio: ne cvile milijuni naroda ali je posve točno da ima takvih koji cvilo za milijunima koje više ne mogu otimati narodu these lies to be spread They print now a lie now a truth but some belicf clings to the lies and that damages ali—those vvho teli the lies as much as those who believe them But we have our democratk nation and vve'll vrin out Q Since there k so much talk of another var and since any spark can set it ablaze teli me once more uhat you think could be done to diasolve the hostile feelings between your country and mine?
