Who can help but love a baby — a sweet, helpless little
mite of human in need of constant care? And-yet, that baby
grovvs and develops into an adult capableof looking after
himself. \ —
What of those babies who have been deprived of this
normal development? What of those thalidomide babies who
vv^ill never be able to look after themselves?Who have been
deprived of the expectation of a normal life?
Several moral questions also arise in a consideration of
the use of a drug affecting the human embryo. Whose res-ponsibility
is the education of the deformed children? For
what occupations can they be trairied, for it is only through
contributing in some wayf to the progress of the world that
people can be happy?"Is"the abortion of an embryo known
to have been exposed to thalidomide during the crucialfirst
three months morally justifiable? Was profit through the
sale of the drug the influencing factor in its availability
several months after the government Food and D r u g Ad^
ministration in Canada suggested its removal from public
sale?
The governments of those countries who authorized the
sale of the drug are planning education centres for these, de­formed
children — and rightly so. These children must be
fitted into the social communit.y and become productive
members of it, handicapped though they are.
The abortion of any human embryo shouldrest with the
parents. It is inconceivable that a parent who knovvs that
his child will be born deformed sl.ould allow the embryo to
develop further. Thcre is a 1 in 3 possibility of deformity
ensuing on the use of the drug. Surely no parent would
be happy to bear a child v^ho might never. walk nor have
the use of limbs.
: The tranquilizing propcrtios of thalidomide may be jus-tification
enough for its sale, but when its use by unsuspect-ing
mothers-to-be results in tragcdy, then the economic pro­fit
involvedcertainly seems a cra.ss revvard. Future packag-ing
vvill have to warn the pub'ic of the drug's effects. Per-haps
its complete removal from Sille forever is the best fate
for this ill-fated drug.
Although the use of thalidomide has focussed public
attention on the mqral and social questigns inherent in its
use, the.se very same questions are with us every day in con-nection
with other facets of our present-day life. Only on
example is criminal abortion. If abortion were legalized and
the economic factorsinvolved in its necessity were equalized
thcn thcre vvould be. no such thing as criminal abortion.
Pcrhops mothers can soon look forward to normal,
healthy,wanted children whom they can care for with pride
and love until these children can look after themselvcs in
the normal .sequence of evcnts.

d e s i r e e.xprcssed for Peace and
F r i e n d s h i p as the theme of the
F e s t i v a l , Myrna was p r e v a i l e d upon
to explain some of her plans for
the future — that is the plans f or
g ym classes etc. i n S u d b u r y to be-gin
with the least.

larged or not to encompass other
communilies, but s h e d i d state that
she is ready to begin gym classes
at the F i n n i s h H a l l on T h u r s d ay
nights for the 1962—63 season as

T h e V I I I festival of Y o u t h a n d
students ended on A u g . 6 w i t h an
outdoor evening, concert and d f c
monstration at H e l s i n k i ' s ^ K o i v u -
puisto. The c o n c e r t was preceded
by a parade of p a r t i c i p a n t s to the
P a r k which was a Volourful and
gay as the opening days march.
The only detectable difference be-ing
a wee b i t of hoarseness i n the
s i n g i n g and c h e e r i n g voices of t h e
young marchers. B u t t h i s is easily
understood after one s o l i d week of
j o y f u l festivities, debates, singing
and other vocal demonstrations f or
Peace and F r i e n d s h i p.
The crovvds at K o i v u p u i s t o that
night were the greatest that the
park ever saw. The lov/est estimate
was 60,000. the highest 150,000, a
f i t l i n g compliment to t h e excellent
concert and c l o s i n g ceremonies
w h i c h marked the e n d of a wonder-f
u l l y succesful festival. ' .
So — what do the papers s ay
about this. Two papers, Kansan
Uutiset and Päivän Sanomat covr
ered the a f f a i r as they had a li
other functions of the f e s t i v a l . But
vvhat about the others — whose
p o l i c y of not r e p o r t i n g on perhaps
the biggest event i n the c i t y ' s his-t
o r y defies rational understanding.
H e l s i n g i n Sanomat, the largest
d a i l y i n t h e country and supposedly
independent in i t 's p o l i t i c s , i n a n
oblique way a d m i t t e d the success
of the f e s t i v a l when they printed
in their A u g . 7 issue that a b ig
clean-up of the grounds at K o i v u -
puisto was necessary. The intent
of the a r t i c l e was to create a h ad
p i c t u r e i n t he m i n d s of the people
of Helsinki by saying that the
grounds were strevvn with litter
and trampled. badly. But t h e a r -
t i c l e s intent backfires because a
good part, i f not most of the popur
l a t i o n of H e l s i n k i , was i n tlTe ge­neral
area of the park, i n c l u d i ng
readers of the H e l s i n g i n ~ S a n o m a t .
T h i s same paper e a r l i e r " i n t he
Week r e p r i n t e d ä N e w Y o r k Times
a r t i c l e that demontsrations in
downtown Helsinki were sponta-neous
outbursts showing that t he
m a j o r i t y of the F i n n i s h people
were against the f e s t i v a l .
The New Y o r k Times, as also
the other western press represen-tatives
have again i n t e r p r e t e d free-d
om of the press to i n c l u d e the
f r e e d om to l i e when the t r u th
doesn't suit them.
B e f o r e the f e s t i v a l began there
was not e v en a h i n t of belligerence
on the p a r t of the people of H e l ­s
i n k i . Indeed one got t h e i m p r e s ­sion
that the e n t i r e city was 100
percent behind the f e s t i v a l . Of
course i t was known that certain
groups around specific political
p a r l i e s had taken a position- of
being against the festiva) and
urged their membership not to sup-port
i t . T h i s d i d n o t however p r e -
vent many members of
these groups from attending festi­val
.activities and even working
f o r the f e s t i v a l .
S p e a k i n g ( i n F i n n i s h ) w i t h cab
d r i v e r s , waitresses; sales clerks and
f a c t o r y workers before the f e s t i v a l
began, I appraised the attitudes of
these people towards the f e s t i v al
and they ranged f r om tolerant ac-ceptance,
because of t h e a d d i t i o n a l
burst of colour and l i f e the fes­t
i v a l would give to the c i t y , to a
deep sincere dedication to t h e fes-t
i v a l ' s slogan "Peace and F r i e n d ­s
h i p " !

Camp Tarmola. Saturday evening a
large number of people turned out
for the cabaret dance. C e r t a i n l y it
was an ideal way to escape the
s w e l l e r i n g heat of the c i t y , w h i l e on
Sunday a good crown. turned out
for the t r a c k and f i e l d meet a nd
c l o s i n g concert. -

W i n i n p c g . — T h e r e comes a time
to most men when, rich i n years,
they can s i t back and view the pasr
s i n g .scene with an a i r of j u s t i ­fiable
detachment. However that
cxperience was m i n e recently a nd
much e a r l i e r i n l i f e than usual. I
was able to attend a " S u u r j u h l a t"
as a p a y i n g c u s t o m e r w i t h o u t being
i n any way e m b r o i l e d i n the actual
preparation or p a r t i c i p a t i o n . T h e
f e s t i v a l provides enough rough
meal for at least a half a dozen
stories but this a r t i c l e w i l l be l i -
mited to one p a r t i c u l a r event a nd
comments thereupon. I refer to the
f i n a l grand concert held at t he
H i l l c r e s t High School on Sunday
evening the 5 th of August.
It was r e a l l y o l d home week! T h e
f e s t i v a l was held i n my hometown
and the concert was staged i n the
hallowed halls of my o l d alma
m a l e r . T h i s last bit of Information
p r i n t e d on the t i c k e t s w a s enough
to raise one of my w e l l combed
eyebrows.
l recalled the a u d i t o r i um of t he
Hillcre-st High School as being
an ill-ventilated, low capacity
soundtrap w i t h l i m i t e d stage area.
U n f o r t u n a t e l y memory served me
only correctly even after the pas-s
i n g dccade since my last atten-dance.
I f any witnesscs are needed,
mr. H. H u h t a n e n w i l l . no doubt be
glad to add w e i g h l t o m y testimony.
The F i n n i s h temperament serves
as a c l u e to t h e i r sometimes pecu-l
i a r behaviour. The only things
F i n n s love more than s i n g i n g a sad
song is s i n g i n g a whole bunch of
sad songs. A n d these are not j u st
one verse and a chorus type of
song. They've got a story to t e l i,
p r e f e r a b l y a IBtig story. But t h i s
desire . f o r : the sombre touch is
not l i m i t e d to s i n g i n g . F i n n s love
to torture themselves^in every way
imaginable.
They enjoy p e r f o r m i n g i n h a l ls
where the people i n t h e back rows
can't hear the sound. T h i s provides
the latter group with an opportu­n
i t y of h u r l i n g loud invective at
the master of ceremonies. ThiS;
worthy i n t u r n can l o u d l y curs^;
the people in the r e a r seats, safe
i n the knowledge that they won't
be able to hear h im anyway.
Concerts must be held i n a h a li
the s i / e of w h i c h w i l l force a stand-ing
rooni only audience. This is
c o n s i d c r c d to be the h a l l m a r k of
success. About half of the d i s g r u n t -
led patrons slanding at the e n -
trances are p a c i f i e d by the availa­b
i l i t y of front row seats. This ac-comodation
appears as soon as the
choirs go on stago to sing their
first combined choral arrange-menls.
Of course, the c h o r u s l c rs
are forced to stand a r o u n d the f i r e
doors for the rest of t h e evening,
but nobody except the singers
themselves seem to m i n d .
People of F i n n i s h extraction
seem to be plagued w i t h the ma­j
o r i t y of the w o r l d ' s b r o n c h i a l a i l -
ments; This lends the crowning
touch to the evening, and' some
members of the audience actually
put on a performance which c o m -
petes with the o n e on stage. A
w e l l - t i m e d cough can d r o w n out the
p a i n s t a k i n g l y rehearsed punchline
of the guest speaker. P a r t i c u l a r ly
good also is the r u m b l i n g chest
type of cough culminating i n a
loud bass explosion i n the m i d d le
of a tender ballad being delivered
by a soft voiced female. There are
also these coughers who do not
a c t u a l l y appear to be d i s r u p t i ng
the programme, but i n s t e a d c a l l i ng
to one another. This takes the f o rm
of a . two cough signal from the
left rear, w i t h a t h r e e cough reply
f r om the r i g h t centre.
Despite the usual distractions,
the grand f i n a l e concert to the fes­t
i v a l at P o r t A r t h u r can be termed
a success f r om any p o i n t of view.
The two h i g h l i g h t s of t h e e v e n i ng
were a young lady south of t he
border who danced her way i n to
t h e hearts of the audience, and a
group of s i x f e l l o w s from Toronto,
who proved that you c a n have f un
s i n g i n g . I think this d i d serve to
i l l u s t r a t e one p o i n t ; that the spec-tators
are r e c e p t i v e to a b i t o f
change after two days of c h o i r ap-pearances.
A good many people i n
the audience do not understand
F i n n i s h and tend to be b o r e d by
an overdose of F i n n i s h songs.

Why? Were they spontaneous?
Let me h e g i n with a personal
experience. On Saturday night,
J u l y 28, t h e n i g h t of the f i r s t de-monstration.
I ' h a d supper at a
place on M a n n e r h e im St. A f t e r sup;
per I.,walked dawn the Street to-wards
a crowd. of several hundred
i n front of the O l d U n i v e r s i ty
House. I had no i d e a why the crowd'
was there and w a l k e d right into
its midst wearing a large festival
piUi A n d I saw a bunch of young
drunks, many i n t h e i r teens scur-'
r y i n g about and y e l l i n g a n d whist-'
lingi- Ön t h e c u r b side stood most
of the crowd looking at these
young sports with a " d o y o u
t h i n k we c a n t h r o w . t h em peanuts?"
expression. I overheard four u n -
stable swaying youths a p p a r e n t ly
staying on t h e i r feet only thanks
to a geometric balance accidently
found when leaning o n each other
commenting on the " A n t i - C h r i s t"
and " A m o r a l " nature of the fes­t
i v a l . I w a l k e d through this crowd,
no one stoped me, no one spoke
to me except f o r t h e o d d s m i l e and
wave from some people on t he
curb side. Of course by t h i s time
I knew i t was an a n t i - f e s t i v a l de-monstration
and I crossedManner-h
e im Street, where another crowd
of several hundred, mostly f e s t i v al
people had gathered t o ' s e e what
the fuss was a l i about. Here I
found out' that these people "lättä­hatut'
had gathered to boo a n d
whistle as festival vehicles a nd
busses passed by. S o v i e t and. E a s t
German vehicles bore the brunt
of the l o u d e s t boos. A t one point;
the ' ' s p o r t s " broke into "O maam­me
Suomi", or at least that was
my guess. The words and music
were quite a l c o h o l i c a l l y scrambled.
The nolse continued until after
midnight, which was when their
audience dispersed f r om boredom.
U n f o r t u n a t e l y , some Soviet bus­ses
were damaged that night a n d
the police prepared tp take strong
action against vandalism. A U I h is
seemed strange and inconsistent
considering the impressions from
priefestival discussions with many
people of d i f f e r e n t outlooks i n the
• c i t y . - ,
One thing seemed significant.
The noise making that Saturday
night (and subsequent ones) was
around the O l d U n i v e r s i t y House
on M a n n e r h e im Road f r om where
an arcade type passage leads to
t h e railway station. This part of
the downtown area is a regular
stamping ground for the local
"teddy boys".
