What is the reason for the steady
progress made by Soviet sportsmen?
The secret of Soviet sports lies in
its mass nature. Millions of people
both. m the towns and countryside
20 in for phys:cal training and sports.
Most of them belong to the sports
societies. which have at thetr dls-posal
the necessary coaches and ins-,
tructors. as well as differcnt facillties,
stadmnvs, .sv/imming pools. alp:nc
öamps, skiing station";, cycling tracks,
giTOs and, courts.
There are 23 tradc union sports societies
i n . t h e.USSR. The workers and
employees of every separale branch
cfth*'Soviet national economy have
sport clubs of their own. Thus, those
•who work on the railways belong to
the Locomotive sport society,^ the
miners to the Shakbter society, the
iron and Steel workers to the -Me-tallurg,
etc.
I n some of the Union Tlepjiblics
there are also mixed sports societies
whose membership does not follow
trade unioni affiliation. In latvia,
for instance, there i s the Daugava
sports society which unltes machlne-builders,
schoolmasters, and reprc-sentatives
of other branches of the
national economy. The Kalev society
i n Estonia and Jalgiris i n Lithuania
follow the same pattern.
Besides the trade union sports societies,
there are also a niunber of
societies i n the Soviet Union such as
the Dynamo, the Spartak etc. The
rural sportsmen axe uniteä i n sepa-xate
sports societies set up i n every
Union Republic of the USSR In the
postwar years.
AU the sports societies are large
organizations with a membership
running into tens. of thousands.The
Nauka students' sports society and
the Medik society, cach of them has
a membership of 300,000. .The Bure-vestnik,
which unites Communications
workers. and vorkers of the trading
and catering networks, has 200,000
members, and Metallurg — 180,000.
The training and coaching of Soviet
sportsmen is done. in the main,
by sporUs societies v/hich arc amply
provided with the necessary where-witlaal.
Thus,. i n 1954 the Metalliurg
society received from the trade unions
50,000 rubles for this purpose. .
An important part in thC;training
of sportsmen is played by "the com-^
mittees for physical culture and sport,
State organs which direct and control
this procesö. The committees are set
up by the Soviets for the purpose of
organizing the physical training of
the population in their rcspective
'districts, reglons, or republics. They
also supervLse the sports activity of
schools and other edueational cs-tabljshments,
factories, offices and
collective farms, and organize games
and competitions bctween tlie diffe-rent
societies and clubs. ; '
The .sportsmen receive their basic
physical training wlicn yet in school.
P. T Isssons arc givcn there from
the first to the tenth gradc by hlgh-ly
experienced instructors, predo-minantly
gradua tes of special collegea
or higher edueational establi-s-h-ments.
The P. T. iastructors in tiic
