— Viime Viikon lopulla suoritettiin täällä kolmois-maaoltelu; Ranska—Japani—Ruotsi. Ruotsalaiset kaatoivat Suomen jalkapallon H e l s i n k i .— Ruotsalaiset kaatoivat Suomen jalkapallon jälleen komeasti "eteenpäin". Suurien kuvitelmien yllä leijuu taas todellisuus. Viime viikolla hävisi A-joukkue Ruotsissa 4-r-O, pojat 4—1. B-jouk' kue kaatui Vaasassa 1—0 ja nuoret Lahdessa 3—1. Neljän ottelun kokonaisnumerot 12—2, Amerikkalaiset Kreikassa kuin siirtomaaherrat Ateena. -T- Suuri ryhmä kreikkalaisia työläisiä ja teknikkoja, jotka ovat työisä ja toimesFa Kreikassa s i jaitsevissa.; U S A n sotilastukikohdissa, ovat esittäneet Ateenan tuomioistuimelle valituksen; että amerikkalaiset likkovat alkeellisimpiakm työehtoja ja'su.htau'uvat törkeästi kreikkalaisiin työläisiin. Kreikassa olevat amerikkalaiset käyttäytyvät kuin siirtomaassa ja pitävät kreikkalaisia "alempaan rotuun kuuluvina", sanotaan työläisten valituksessa. Virallisissa kirjelmissään kreikkalaisille työntekijöilleen amerikkalaisen toiminimen " A i r f i e l d Main-tcnance Company" johto nimittää heitä idiooteiksi, hölmöiksi, laiskureiksi ja elukoiksi. /Sanomalehti Avge kertoo, että vaikka työtuomioistuimen tuomarit ovatkin tunnustaneet työläisten anomuksen asiallisuuden, n i in hc civtst kuitenkaan ole t6hncct minkäänlaisia päätöksiä. FEDERATION MEETING INDICATES CLUBS VERY ACTIVE The annual meeting of the F i n nish, Canadian Amateur Sports Federation was held Aug. 7, 1961 at the Finnish Hall, Sudbury, Ont. and from the Reports given by the various member clubs it appears artivities are on the upward trend. Selected as chairmen for the meeting were A. Widgren and U . Penttinen and as secretaries P. Vaurio and W. Rönkä. ; A report was read on the "Suur-juhlas" held in 1960'at South Por-cupine in which 91 athletes and gymnasts had parlicipated. The minutes of this meeting are to be written in Finnish and mi-meographed copies will be sent to each member club. U.Penttinen reported on the Finnish Canadian Ski Association and mentioned last year's cham-pionship meet had been held at Port Arthur sponsored by Elo and Isku ACs. K. Lehto, honorary and charter member of Yritys A.C., which is 55 years old, was present as an Observer and treated ali official representatives at the meeting to a lunch at Työn Puisto. Official reprensentatives of the various clubs then gave verbal re-ports on their past year's acti-vities. A. Widgren of North Branch Elo pointed out particularly their past year's ski meet and the in-tcrest in the Winter sport Viesti A. C , South Porcupine's E. Ketola mentioned that the track and field team which took third place i n t h e ' t o tai points over the weekend was proof, of their re-newed stimulus in this field. Gynmastics has played a large part in activities of Port Arthur Isku, said P. Voutilainen. Their member A i l i Kaarela, had taken part. in the recent Canadian gym-nastic champi^nships in Saskatoon and four of their young girls had performod at a week long event in Fort vVilliam held by a local business men's or^anization. ' Teron o Yritys A.C., which had held il's 55th annual concert last Mr.rch : was reprensented by Joh.v Mäki and Eric Junnila. Various. interests were mentioned in-cluding gymnastics, track and field, drama, Fin-Gun Club with 30 members. Folk Dance Group d i - rected' by Dolores Niskanen, edu-cational discussion groups. Club News in VapauS; The giiTs gymnasts had appeared at Palermo park at the Labor Festival and w i l l be there this year as.well. The men's tumbling group as weU as the children's gym group have also given performances at the Don Hall and Tarmola camp. The track and field team sent a group Lisäys Yrityksen kilpailukutsuun Toronto. Toronlon Yrityksen kilpailukutsu julkaistiin viime viikon torstaina Vapaudessa. Siitä puuttui kilpailulaji, josta on vastuullinen Yritys. Lisäys siihen on, että naisille on järjestetty 3-ottelu (100 m. kuula ja piLuushyppy). this past sumnief to both South Porcupine and Beaver Lake. — U . Sirviö of Alerts A.C. mentioned that although they. took paft in track meets at Wanup and Beaver Lake they also have begun a" new track at Wanup with the Visa A.C. Their turnout of boys had not been good. Their girls per-formed in the recent Suurjuhlas in the mass gym. ; A track meet had been held by Wanup Visa A.C. and P. H i l l pointed out their membership consis-ted mainly of the younger group. W. Rönkä of Beaver Lake Jehu indicated that skiing is their main interest but that last winters lack of snow curtailed it. Their recent track and field meet was a success and their membership has in-creased. I t was unanimously decided to support "The Canadian Committee for the Control of Radiation Ha-zards" and that everything pos-sible should be doneby each club to further the advancement of peaceful relations by ali countries of the World. Helsinki will be the host in the summer of 1962 of the World Youth Congress.lt was recommen-ded that steps should be taken to send representatives there to par-ticipate and that ali clubs and Finnish Organization locals would assist towards this end. Discussions took place on the co-opetration between the Sports Federation and other organizations such as the Finnish Organization. Canadian Ski Federation, Amateur Athletic Union, T U L in Finland and others, and good relations are to be continued. Next year's "SuurjulasV are to be at Port Arthur on the civic holiday weenkend. . - This year's merit awards went t o Laila Tammi, Visa A . C , Wal-fred Rönkä Jehu A.C. and Jack Hymander, Alerts A.C. Two other nominees were Eini Kaarela Isku and Elsie Jokinen, Yritys A. C. whose names will/appear on next year's recommendation. A Special award of $50.00 and a letter of appreciation from the Federation went to Paavo Voutilainen for excepUonal work in the past. ;„ Jack Karvonen, president of the Federation, said a few words in appreciation of the good work done by ali the clubs and of the splendid turnout and sportsman-ship of the athletes and gymnasts. The same slate to the federation Executive was elecled with Jack Karvonen president, P. Vaurio Secretary and A. Illbury Treasurer plus four additional members, ali of Toronto. It was recommended that ali fu-ture circulating trophies donated for various events have stipula-tions that they do not carry on indefinitely but should terminate and be kept by the Winner after a specified number of wins. The_ trophy donated by Viesti A.C. for the 4x100 metre relay was won in South Porcupine by Jehu A.C. in July 1961 and will be competed for again in Beaver Editorial lt's Äll Over But the Sliouting The heat of the Juhla excitement has subsided ^^=^ery-one has gone home—and anöther wonderful festival is over. Surely ali the 3,000 spectators experienced a heartwarm-ing leeling of joy in listeriing to the massed choirs,~m watch-in the sports events, in seeing. beautiful young gymnasts and dancers. That feeling of unity that comes with a sense of cooperation in participation, when everyone is trying his best to make the Juhla a success! Everyone felt it — it was in the air — at the track, at the hali, in the theatre. Even the Saturday afternoon rain did not dampen the enthusiasm generated by good v/ill and cameradie. People crowded the hali for the play and for.all three dances, and the theatre :wäs chuck full for the best festival concert ever, there was certainlyenough for everyone to see and do! A vote of thanks to ali participants and particularly, to the hard-working Sudbury people! This Juhla will be a memorable one for another reason. In the midst of our Sunday programme the startling news of Titov's cosmic achievement came over the loudspeaker. A new wave of excitement stirred the already excited crowd, as they heard the news of yet another^^of man's accomplish-ments over nature. It was truly a good day, Aug. 6, 1961 — a day to revel in being alive and part of the human race. Space and Want (Continued) SUM UP : Although very expensive space re-rcarch will provide many rewards of which some are already available, the follo\ving are a summary of the more obvious results and hopes of space investlgation. (D A better understanding of the earth in the solar system and the universe. Earth's shape is better known. Geodesy, cartography, gravi-tational studies will ali be aided by satellite measurements. Earth sci-entists Avill be helped in their study and understanding of earth processes and their exploration'for raw mate. rials. ••• (21 "Study of the earth's atmo-sphere provides a better understanding of problems arising from the ef-fect cf the atmosphere on the earth and man. The Van Allen belts of radiation have been plotted, the corn-position of the atmosphere has been analyzed.- Aurora, meteoric dust, lo-nosphere, temperature, man's cap-^ ability in space have aU been stu-died. Long-range weather forecast-ing from cloud pictures taken from satellites will be practical i n the near future. Communication of ali types over long distances will be aided by Lake on July 1, 1962. More publicity should be given to our track and field and also to the various trophies in cir-culation. Participation as officials in sports events by more of the younger members was recommended and such methods for gaining experience as courses, discussions and as assistants at actual meets was suggested. ' The meeting d o s e d and was fol-lowed by a short film on the recent gymnastic competition in Saskatoon. The next annual meeting is to be held in Port A h h u r on the Mon-day foIlowing the Suurjuhla week-end in 1962. — IKE. Communication satellites. (3) Orbltted telescopes will provide a better and clearer picture of the universe. The whole spectrum of electromagnetic waves will allow a better understanding of the history and evolution of the universe. Further space travel will be assisted by better astronomic data. ; , . (4) Placing man on the moon will be man's first step into the solar system. Undoubtedly the moon is a very vita! goal for further research into space. The moon will provide a very permanent, large, dependable, stable satellite for a large space la. boratory. The origin of life will be-comeclearer from the further research cabability avail^ble by use of the moon. i t will provide a base for further space exploration, a re-servoir for fuel, repair materlal and because of its smaller gravlty, space ships. will need less propulsion to escape from it when maktag deep space probes. The moon may give the answer to the origin of the solar system. Ore deposits may be available on it. (5) Little has been yet said about the development of new instruments and materials used in space research. The Communication media, tele-phone, radio, television will improve. New products will be a byproduct of miniturizing for space instruments Ce.g. watches). New uses for metals and alloys are being discovered which will help Industry to solve techno-logical problems on earth. The new engines will bring forward new con_ cepts of power which may revolu-tionize earth transport. The har-nessing of atom fusiön energy to space engines by means of magntic bottles will revolutionize power uti_ lization and reduce its cost. There are hundreds of o"ther products and developments which wm' come about from space research wihch will make män's life on earth easler. R. Manjini editor of "Osservatore Romano" the Vatican City newspa-per hailing the Gagarin flight as, " a memorable moment of history" saw development in space science as reflecting, "the superlor image of man as a spiritual creature endowed with liberty and reason, capable of a vastly increasing mastery of the exterlor worId according to the di-vlne commandment." He also believes the first lanuching ' of man Into space, "as a good omen of serene and peaceful stages for man, aY a hope of ^reater brotherhood^in the' risa of thinking . . . because the jgoal of man Is in light not in darkness." The U.S. spends approxmiately 5%' of its massive defence budget on space exploration. Surely from the foregoing it can be seen that space research is, and wlll be, worthwhlle, The crltics should turn their attacfc. on spending that will never be of use to man — mllitary expenditures. A World in which arms are festricted and controlled would allow for many tlmes more money to be spent on feeding. clothlng, and housliig the un_ fortunate of the .world as Dr. Chls-holm and Mr. Tumpane demand, • Space is the challenge our world has been lookhig for. The two great powers have channelk<r sbme of the large amounts of money spent on defence into somethlng that__will be of direct usefulness. Tre space race Is n fat- better way for the virorld's great powers to compete. Torstaina, elok. 17 p. — Thursday, August 17, 1961 Sivu 3 Toronton Finlandia-kuoron harjoituleset tiistaina elok. Ajatus tämän vesireitin avaamisesta syntyi jo y l i 100 vuotta sitten, ehdotuksen siitä teki venäläinan tutkija Mihail Sidorov. The new "world" of space will provide great opportunity for allowing automation_freed man to exert his innate capabllities. The variety and extent of utterly new concepts, ideas, methods, jobs, profelems, and philo-sophies arising from our entry into space will require millions of thinking people. Space ". . . is the hole we are i n" . . ., James Van Allen has been quoted as saying, on. which there ". . . is a vast area of human ig. norance, and the history of "the World shows that attacking ignorance is fruitful." The annual meeting of the F i n nish,
Canadian Amateur Sports
Federation was held Aug. 7, 1961
at the Finnish Hall, Sudbury, Ont.
and from the Reports given by the
various member clubs it appears
artivities are on the upward trend.
Selected as chairmen for the
meeting were A. Widgren and U .
Penttinen and as secretaries P.
Vaurio and W. Rönkä. ;
A report was read on the "Suur-juhlas"
held in 1960'at South Por-cupine
in which 91 athletes and
gymnasts had parlicipated.
The minutes of this meeting are
to be written in Finnish and mi-meographed
copies will be sent
to each member club.
U.Penttinen reported on the
Finnish Canadian Ski Association
and mentioned last year's cham-pionship
meet had been held at
Port Arthur sponsored by Elo and
Isku ACs.
K. Lehto, honorary and charter
member of Yritys A.C., which is
55 years old, was present as an
Observer and treated ali official
representatives at the meeting to
a lunch at Työn Puisto.
Official reprensentatives of the

lt's Äll Over But the Sliouting
The heat of the Juhla excitement has subsided ^^=^ery-one
has gone home—and anöther wonderful festival is over.
Surely ali the 3,000 spectators experienced a heartwarm-ing
leeling of joy in listeriing to the massed choirs,~m watch-in
the sports events, in seeing. beautiful young gymnasts and
dancers. That feeling of unity that comes with a sense of
cooperation in participation, when everyone is trying his
best to make the Juhla a success! Everyone felt it — it was
in the air — at the track, at the hali, in the theatre. Even
the Saturday afternoon rain did not dampen the enthusiasm
generated by good v/ill and cameradie. People crowded the
hali for the play and for.all three dances, and the theatre
:wäs chuck full for the best festival concert ever, there was
certainlyenough for everyone to see and do!
A vote of thanks to ali participants and particularly, to
the hard-working Sudbury people!
This Juhla will be a memorable one for another reason.
In the midst of our Sunday programme the startling news
of Titov's cosmic achievement came over the loudspeaker.
A new wave of excitement stirred the already excited crowd,
as they heard the news of yet another^^of man's accomplish-ments
over nature. It was truly a good day, Aug. 6, 1961 — a
day to revel in being alive and part of the human race.
Space and Want

Although very expensive space re-rcarch

more obvious results and hopes of
space investlgation.

of the atmosphere has been
analyzed.- Aurora, meteoric dust, lo-nosphere,

Long-range weather forecast-ing

More publicity should be given
to our track and field and also
to the various trophies in cir-culation.
Participation as officials in
sports events by more of the
younger members was recommended
and such methods for gaining
experience as courses, discussions
and as assistants at actual meets
was suggested. '
The meeting d o s e d and was fol-lowed
by a short film on the recent

The next annual meeting is to be

Communication satellites.
(3) Orbltted telescopes will provide
a better and clearer picture of the
universe. The whole spectrum of
electromagnetic waves will allow a
better understanding of the history
and evolution of the universe. Further
space travel will be assisted by
better astronomic data. ; ,
. (4) Placing man on the moon will
be man's first step into the solar
system. Undoubtedly the moon is a
very vita! goal for further research
into space. The moon will provide
a very permanent, large, dependable,
stable satellite for a large space la.
boratory. The origin of life will be-comeclearer
from the further research
cabability avail^ble by use
of the moon. i t will provide a base
for further space exploration, a re-servoir
for fuel, repair materlal and
because of its smaller gravlty, space
ships. will need less propulsion to
escape from it when maktag deep
space probes. The moon may give
the answer to the origin of the solar
system. Ore deposits may be
available on it.
(5) Little has been yet said about
the development of new instruments
and materials used in space research.
The Communication media, tele-phone,
radio, television will improve.
New products will be a byproduct of
miniturizing for space instruments
Ce.g. watches). New uses for metals
and alloys are being discovered which
will help Industry to solve techno-logical
problems on earth. The new
engines will bring forward new con_
cepts of power which may revolu-tionize
earth transport. The har-nessing
of atom fusiön energy to
space engines by means of magntic
bottles will revolutionize power uti_
lization and reduce its cost.
There are hundreds of o"ther products
and developments which wm'
come about from space research
wihch will make män's life on earth
easler.
R. Manjini editor of "Osservatore
Romano" the Vatican City newspa-per
hailing the Gagarin flight as,
" a memorable moment of history"
saw development in space science as
reflecting, "the superlor image of
man as a spiritual creature endowed
with liberty and reason, capable of
a vastly increasing mastery of the
exterlor worId according to the di-vlne

the first lanuching ' of man Into
space, "as a good omen of serene and
peaceful stages for man, aY a hope
of ^reater brotherhood^in the' risa
of thinking . . . because the jgoal of
man Is in light not in darkness."
The U.S. spends approxmiately 5%'
of its massive defence budget on
