1952, Senator Joseph McCarthy even

Department of Justice is chiefly con-cemed
wlth silencing Harvey Matu-sow,
and to keep from\the public the
dlsclosures of his book. Government
attorneys were thwarted twice in their
efforts to haul Matusow before a
Secret grand jury before he appears
in open court. This public appear-ance
is in connection with an affi-davit
in which he swears he lied at
the trial of 13 Communist leaders
now serving prison sentences under
the Smith Act.
The - publishers. Angua.- Cameron
and Albert E. Kahn, weressunuBoned
before a Grand Jury, which both men
describe in a public statement as an
'attempt to keep from the public the
book'& disclosures, some of which im-plicate
the Department itself."
Although. the Justice Department
is trying to defend its use • of paid
informers, much press comment has
been bitterly ciitlcal of the practice.
The Washington Post asks (Feb. 2):
"How many Americans have been un-justly
convicted onthe basis of Matu-sow's
perjured testimony? Hovv many
other^ have been sent to prison. or
condemned before Congressional in-vestigating
• committees by other
former Communist perjurers who like
Matusow decided to make witnessing
a lucrative career?" . .
And the New York Times com-mented
(Feb. 5): •"What it does is
to require the Justice Department to
re-examine ali thecases in which this
man's testimony did play a signifi-cant
part . . •. . - • •.
Willard Shelton, CIO News column-ist;
saw Matusaws confession as a
sign öf a "crack-up in the ranks of
the anti-Cömmunist political racke-teers"
and said such an event ."will
be a joyful one".
Endicott Is Assured Of
"No Further Incidents"
Vancouver Police Commission has

head of the National Federation of
Labor Youth, some months ago, and
has written the youth leader, assuring
him that "no further incidents of this
natiure will take place."

.The statement in the letter that
"reports have been obtained from ali

to the incident" is false, because
one eye-witness, eitting next to En­dicott
in the car he was driiving, was
never called upon to appear.

who exceed their authority can be
called upon to account for their ac-tions,
whenever people who are man­handled
have the courage to demand

Tvas received from Toronto, that
the Yritys hockey team h a s «on a
play-off spot in the THL Inter-msdiatc
play-offs. The report
did not indicate wbat chances the
club has, but judging f r om the
reccrd of past years with a little
luck the team should emerge near
the top.
For several years now the team
has got into the play-offs but has
not played consistently enough
to emerge on top. Last year was
probably the best year for the
club when they were piaced in the
senior play-offs.

Whitefish. _ T^e Skl committee of
the FCASF vvhich is composed of
representatives of the Sudbury Dis­trict
clubs has had a busy season this
year. Perhaps one of the biggest
tasks undertaken by the committee
was getting local skiers attired in a
distinctive ski suit.
In the last while the committee
has been plagued with financlal wor-ries
arising out of the heavy costs of
sending nziers to the Canadian cham-pionship
meets: Because of the high
costs of travelllng the ski committee
has felt that indivldual clubs should
iiot alone bear the flnancial burden
•when FCASF skiers are sent to Can­adian
champlonship meets. And some
of the clubs are in no position to
meet such expenses. The committee
has alreadycirculated.collection lists
and the response has been good, but
more money is needed.
A special ski dance is belng held
at the Whitefish "Barn" Friday.
March 4. The proceeds will be used
to pay for traveli.ng .6xpenses of
skiers. The "Barn" is located uear
the Penage Hotel and is Ju-st off
Highway 17. Everybody is welcome
to come and enjoy the frolic. Sam
