U n f o r t u n a t e l y, the problem with
moving I.S that It takes about two
months for the post office. to
catch up to you. We ju.st received
Xmas cards about 3 we6k ago
w h i c h were mailed some time m
Pecember. I did hear that the
e x e c u t i v e is about the same as
last year, which is very good news.
T m sort of hopmg the report
hasn't been in yet, a n d that we
can look forward to reading about
it soon.

had a ^onderful workout this
Winter. Apparently there were
enthusiastic s k i i r s and loboganners
there practically every weekend,
and the hiUs adjoimng Tarmola
have given them some excellent
runs.- Speaking about s k i i n g , from
the sounds of things the S k i Meet
i n Beaver Lake was a great
suGccss. So was last Sunday's
Indoor Jump Meet. Bob M i n e r,
f r om what 1 hear, broke the
standing highjump record with a
j u m p of 1:45, a nd i f this is so,
congratulations are i n order Bob.

t h e i r events — the bigger c h i l d r en
(menfolk that is) as w e l l .
B e i n g s a f a r away f r om what is
acfually gomg on, the Vapaus has
come to mean a great deal to us.

pleasure vvhen we can read an

SO much. easier leading, I must
a d m i t ) . I am sure we are a l i
anxious to do what we can to sup­port
our clubs, and to assist in
making this year a p a r t i c u l a r ly
b i g one. Some of us, f o r various

— but there is nothing to stop
us from doing our b i t b y suppor-i
n g activities. events etc. when-ever

Drama Festival
And so,'another F. O. o£ Canada
prama Festival has drawn to a
close. It leaves one ratlier nos-,
talgic, after ali that excitement.
And excitement there was a plenty
on Saturday and Sunday. Some
performances were absolute
THEATRE. The teamwork bet-ween
actors, the _characterizations,
left nothing to be desired.
There are perhaps some who
were left frustrated, not knowing
just what was wrong with our per-formance,
what was lacking. In
these cases it is extremely diffi-cult
to explain i n a few words.
For instance, frustration itself is
something an inspiring actor must
experience many times before
one can come close to raastering
the requirements that make a good
actor.
Acting is nol simply a matter o f
memonzing Iines, you must analize
the character you are portraying,
study the play as a whole, your
relation to the play as a whoIe.:
Don't leave any changes to the'
dress-rehearsals.
You might try your hand at d i -
recting, by working with children.
As they have no inhibitions you
w i l l see how quick they are to
grasp the meaning of the play and
how excellent their teamwork is.
And they simply love it-

recting with an open mind. Never;
shun criticizm as long as i t is con-,
structive; Libraries h o i d a wealth'
of material on this subject. Alsft
you should take in as much/Week-end
workshops with English speak-'
ing groups as you can. You alway5

The following are used in ad-judication
of the X>ominion Drama
Pastival Plays. They v j l l give
you an idea of what is expected
of actors as well as directors who
participate i n drama festivals.
1. Acting (40 marks) — cha-i-
acterization, emphasis on eharac-.
ter gesturcs. make-up, enunciation,
audibility. •
2. Production (40 marks) team-work,
tempo, grouping, jnterpre-tation.
3. Stage presentation (10 marks)
sets, lighting, properties, costumes.
4. Dramatic Enterprize (10
marks) quality of play.
Directors Award — overall Pro­duction,
stage presentation, pace,
grouping, teamwork.
Use these rules as a guide to
improve your acting, lo try your
hand at di recting, and you will
find they become habit. Remem-ber,
the audience comes tQ be en-tertained.
It is the finished product
that counts. Don't be afraid to
experiment with new ideas. Don't
let anyone's belittling effect you.
They may very well swallow their
gall when they see the finished
product.
