the unanimous desire of our whole

f i rm opinion that the d a r k c l o u d s of.
I war and conscription v h i c h threaten
us c a n hc swept aside by negotiations
betiween the leaders of a l i p a t l o n s .
There are no differences v h i c h can-;
not be settled around the table i n the
interests of saving our country and
our people f r om the horros and des-t
r u c t i on of another war,
Many C a n a d i a n y o u t h organizations
have alrcady spoken. out for peace.
They represent a large section of the
organized y o u t h movement. T h i s cre-ates
the basis for. a u n i t e d y o u t h peace

We c a l l upon ali youth organizations,
' y o u t h leaders and individuals
to Join theh- efforts ta this great

We believe that young Canadians

memorial—red flowers growing
ta the formation of a cross. A t the

xross made f r om two riigged poles;
iHanging f r om the centre of t h i s t a li
cross was a r o l l of ibarbed wlre. A low:
rock wall w i t h a plaque of names o n
i t stood near t h e ' m e m o r i a l l ' " A f ew

O n i y eight years ago, ta 19i3,; Ledlce
was Just another quiet l i t t l e town o f
Czeckoslovakia.. I t h a d 515 . t a h a b l -
tants a n d 220 houses.
Diu-lng the w a r . L i d i c e w a s . l n Che
hands of t h e G e r m a n N a z i ? . . I t s people
were ruled by t h e Vice-protector
of B o h e m i a - M a r a v i a , H e y d r i c h , better
known t o the C z e c i k - p c o p i e ; a s the
" B u t c h e r . " His nickname sh0ws the
h a t r e d the Czeck people h a d ,for their
r u l e r . In June,'1943, H e y d r i c h was
k i l l e d b y a group of Czecks. Some say
that i t was done by C l e c k s who were
parachuted down by a ' ^ i t i s h . plane.
To avenge the k i l l i n g .of H e y d r i c h ,
the Nazis informed the L i d i c e {Jeople
that every man of the .town ;VouId i>e
executed. Eefore they -v?ere,lined u p
against a walL a n d shot cold-blooded-l
y . the 173 of t h em were d r l v c n i n to
the small basement o f a f a r m e r H o -
r a k ' s h o u s e . (This was the rock basement
that we s a w — i t looked< almost
impossible that 173 ^ men% oould be
crammed tato i t ) . F a r m e r Horak's
s o n was i n E n g l a n d a t t h e . t i m e of
Heydrlch's k i l l i n g , This cotacidence
made i t ^asy f o r the bloodthlrsty Nazis
to say that Horak's s o n #asAthe one

men of L i d i c e should be t o r t u r e d ta

free of charge b y t h e govemment f or
t h o s e f o r m e r people of L i d i c e w h o
are fortunate enough to be back. W e
asked to see the inside o f one of those
new houses. It'wa8 a beautiful and
m o d em insldet as I t was out. I t was

a n d f u r a l t u r e of the latest
design. Yes l l f e h a s started anew i n
L i d i c e . . . W c v e r e t o l d t h a t they are
even going to estafolish a collective

As .we walked back to our bus. we
remembered the o l d L i d i c e a n d the
prioe its people h a d t o p a y . We re

as she clasped o u r hands axul hugged
us. We remembered her Important,

The idea of h o l d i n g a y o u t h festival
was started sometlme ago by y o u ng
members of t h e C a n a d i a n Peace C o n -
grcss. As soon as they h a d mentloned
t h e i r idea to some Of the T o r o n to
youth leaders preparations got under
way. The • 'Prcpäratory •. Committce
soon embraccd. representatlves of:
most. of the y o u t h organizations that
were carrylng o n actlvltle» tftrough-out
the summer snonths and i t w as
evldcnt f r om the very beginning that
the F e s t i v a l w o u l d b e a big success.
I n taltlating the F e s t i v a l i t was
