esittämään «vaikuttavan:: Srnäytöksl-sen

on Eero Alpin kirjoittama peithedraa-ma.
Vaikka näytelmä etvqpäässä ku­vaakin
/yhden perheen kärsimyksiä 'ja
pettymyksiä on se mielestäul erikoi*
sen onnistunut kuvaus ihmisten ^
ykshxpä sivistyneistönkin - r - väärästä
suhtautumisesta niihin vakaviin ja
suuriin yhteiskunnallisiin kysymyksiin
kuin on esim. sukupuolitaudit.

leam more about the land of their
paients, the lanä so far avay but

they are rightly proud bf the fine
democratic tradiUons and high cultu-ral
denrelopment of the Finnish people,
who inhablt the land of thousands
of lakes and maashes. They ali know
that Finland. which we affectlonafe-ly
oall '^Suoml", is not the moun-tainous
country that it is conunonly
ihought to be, but a hilly and rugged
country, where the days are very short
<:iu1ng the Winter months and very
long in the anidsummer.
Our young'people "knovr,'that PIÄ^^
land has glven to the vtrorld that

and such people as Sibelius,
Eliel Saarinen, Numnl ja many others.
When it comes to .the history of
Finland, howeiver, then we fiMd' some
unbertainty and even some nUsunder-standlngvamongst
a portlon of'our
3oung peoirfe. Here again we ha»e a
great asset, the f act that young people
are ahle to lodk at thlngs with open
ndnds not jioisoned with age long
prejudices. Here are some baslc facts
about the history of Finland:
During the yeairs of H55—1609, Fin­land
was under the rule of Sweden.
Incidently, it was oidy in 1154 that
the Finnish people were christianized
and in the sixteenth century, when
Sweden made a grand duchy of this
area, Sweden ^>ecame the official and
literary language of Finland. This
period of Finziish history Is very im-portant,
because it was then, when
Sweden and Russia were constantly
at war with each-other, that Finland
consequently suffered much of those
v/ars which were fought on her soil.
ActuaUy i t wa9 much like the war of
1812 v?hen Great Britain and the
United States slugged It out on Can­adian
soU and Canada had ivery little
if any part at ali in the actual war-fare
or issue involved. Thls period of
Finnish history is of ten onesidedly
referred to, to prove how many times
Russia, or our "perivihollinen", has
"attacfced" Finland, whereas the ac­tual
f ighting was between Sweden and
Russia, though it uufortunately took
plaoe on Finnish solL
As a result of Napoleonic wars, F i n ­land
was under the rule of Russian
tzars from 1809 to 1917. And from the
tum of /he century the rules of Russia
organiz^d a series of attacks agalnst
Finnish rights, cuiminating in the
nutnlfesto of 1899« which ordered ali
sorts 'of repressive measures. But
even when under these repressive
measures in 1016, for the first time

of Finland elected a socialist ma-jority
into parliament (eduskunta).
Out of a total of 200 representaUves
the socialists had 103. It was thls
govermnent that among otherthings,
made the 8-hour day a ]aw. The
sociailist majority wanted independ­ence
even then, and in 1817 the par­liament
passed the "law of July 18.
1917" (Valtalalkl) which stated that
the parUament of Finland holds
supreme power in the country. A

Provisional Russian governtaient for
sanctlon was passed by 104 to 86.
The Provisional Government of
Kerensky. on being informed of this,
refused oven to conslder it, and at the
request of the bourgeolsie of Finland
dfssoived the parliament and ordered

Then came the October revolubion in
Russia and the: power passed\ from
the hands of Kerensky: and his Pro-,
visionor Government to; the Bolshe-vists.
j^' For fear that the-revolution
tiight spread to Finland and thereby
lose /theh": oruling, position, the big
shots of Flnianditoo became intCTested
in independance. The parliam^ent of
Finland then on Dee. 6 (this I5 why
Dee 6: Is celebrated as Independence
Day) -passed the declaration of inde­pendance.
According to the, Encyclo­pedia.
Britannica:. . . the Finnish
Senate f inally appealed" to the Bolshe-rist
Government and was Informed
on Jan. 4, 1918 that steps taken con-fcrmed
with the policy and, pro-graimme
of the bolshevists. Imme-dlately
afterwards, the Swedish Gov­ernment
recognized the Independence
of Finland and was followed by other
Scandinavian coimtries. Recognition
by France preceded recognition: by
Germany. Ia other words, the Soviet
Govemmeixt was 1 Irst to recognize the
Independence of Finland. *
The newly elected parliament of
Finland, where the socialists no longer
fcad a^majority, began;'.to curb.rights
of the worker8. The cost of llving was
rislng and thereby the worlcers b^an
to lose their oonfldence In the gov-enunent.
The socialist represcntatlves
presented to the parliament a ^'we
demand" programme for the better-ment
of the living conditions of the
v;orkers, whichywas rejected, Then
followed a general stirlke or "Suur-laMco"
dmlng which the whole country
v;as paralyzed. Revolutlonary sentl-ment
wa» growing. -

counteract thls the socialists began to
train their "redguards". General
Mannerheim gathered his fcovcs from
the peasantry in order to put down
the woking class. '
The, workers werc forccd to fight
back and as a result lifted the red
lamp,to the steeple of the "työväen­talo"

Helsinki that the workers were out to
defend their democratic rigbta by
taking the pow£r into their own
hands. This way the civil war was
forced on the working people of Fin^
ViXiA, who dld not want It and were
not prepared for It. '
The clvIl war broke out after two
months of independance, - on Januairy
28, 1918,.after the Soviet govemoient,
8weden and other countries had re-cogndzed
the Independance of Finland
The workers put up a valiant fight but
for the lack of tralning and proper
leadersh^ they were at a disadvan-tage,
and after ten weeks of fighUng,
German trpops under General von der
Ooltz, attacked the reds £rom the rear.

wiithdraw from the second World war.

home and abroad. They glve us the

Finland allled themselves wlth Hitler's
Germany agalnst the Soviet Union,
