MRS. L . W. BARRETT
Elizabeth Belle V/ altz was born
i n Ridgeville, Indiana, i n 1876. When
she was fourteen months old her parents
moved to Elmwood, Nebraska, where
she attended school. Her father was
Pennsylvania Dutch and her mother's
people were Welsh. The country
schools were not graded and the pupils
ranged i n age from five years to 21 as
the big boys attended only i n winter.
Later she attended Normal School
and obtained a state c e r t i f i c a t e for
teaching. She only taught six months
as she was married i n 1901 to Lynn Warwick
Barrett.
In 1902 they moved to Kansas where
they lived for eight years. In 1910
they moved to Aldersyde, Alberta, to the
farm where she s t i l l resides.
Mrs. Barrett was at the organization meeting of the Aldersyde
W. I. when Miss Mclsaac was speaking i n a railway car i n 1914. During
her long membership she served as secretary for many years and
she was also Convener of Agriculture. On the occasion of her 85th
Birthday, December 5th, 1961, Mrs. Barrett was honored by Aldersyde
W. I. by a L i f e Membership i n the Alberta V/ omen's Institute i n recogn
i t i o n of her long and f a i t h f u l service.
Mrs. Barrett r e c a l l s the branch having had many demonstrations
i n cooking, m i l l i n e r y and dressmaking. She also remembers when Mrs.
N e l l i e McClung spoke to a gathering while standing i n a hayrack.
She has been a staunch worker i n the l o c a l V/ omen's Missionary
Society and i n 1926 was given a L i f e Membership i n that organization.
