Outdoor education "For kids who are' used to seeing only the few trees on their street, it feels strange at first to be surrounded by thou-sands of them". This was principal Chuck Hopkins' comment to a group of journa-lists who visited his unique Toronto Board of Education school last month. The Boyne River Natural Science School is located 60 miles nortwest of Toronto on 314 acres of virgin land, transversed by the Boyne River, and purchased by the Toron-to Board of Education 12 years ago. Every week during the school year, 150 students from the Board's Toronto schools participate in the Boyne River program. The majority are from Grade 6 but prog-rams are also arranged for Grades 7 to 13. "We think it's important for city students to have at least a week of outdoor edu-cation. For this reason each year, every Grade 6 student has a chance to come here or to the Board's Island Outdoor Natural Science School". Mr. Hopkins went on to explain that the main function of the school is to supplement the indoor curri-culum. "The students are Involved in more than 7 hours of. actual Instruction and learning periods every day during their stay here. They become involved with the natural environment and learn those parts of the science, social studies, geography, physical education and other curlcula which are best learned through first hand encounter". The school has sufficient resources to carry out its educational program. The main building has a large common room with adjoining Jabs and smaller work and study areas. National Balet of Cuba Monday June 26 to Saturday July 1 , at the O'Keefe Centre. International Guitar Festival Sunday June 18 — 24, at Johnson Building (University of Toronto) Guitar 78 — International Guitar Festival presented by Guitar Society of Toronto In co-operat- ion with the Facultyof Music. The outdoor area includes a river, ponds, swamp, river slopes, outcropplngs, grassland and many different types of trees. It abounds in bird, fish and animal life. Students often visit local farmers who provide experiences In everything from sheep shearing and milking cows to haying and harvesting crops. Retired people In the nelghbpurhood often visit the school and contribute their skills in the sawmill, maple sugar shack, fish hatchery and craft room Mr. Hopkins told the journalists that some parents are reluctant to allow their children to spend a week at the Boyne River School'because they are concerned about the dormltary and supervision arrangements and the educational value of the program. "I wish we could bring the parents here to see for themselves", he said. "There are 2 separate dormitories for girls and boys and the home room teachers have their own rooms in the dormitories and are responsible for the students's behaviour at all times. The school also has a full time matron nurse". When asked how parents can find out more about the school, Mr. Hopkins said that one or two months prior to a class trip, a team from the Boyne visits the Toronto school to talk with students, teachers and any concerned parents. "There is also an excellent slide show about the school with taped commentaries In Italian, Portuguese, Greek, Chinese and English. But the best thing for parents to do is to call their local school". The new Immigration Law The Immigration Group of the Law Union of Ontario has computed a 70 page booklet entitled "Canada's New Immigration Act: a Guide and Critical Commentary". The Immigration Group is a collective of lawyers and law students who practice immigration law in Toronto and are concer-ned with the problems of immigrants in Canada. They have compiled an analysis of the new law which came into effect on April 10th, 1978. The booklet discusses the major areas of immigration law, with specific reterence to sections of the new Act and Regulations, as well as providing background information on immigration policy and problems in Canada. Included are chapters on: Refugees, Admissibility and Removal from Canada, Landed Im-migrant Status, Visitors to Canada, Cana-dian Citizenship, Security Provisions of the Act, and a History of Immigration in Canada. The Immigration Working Group initially decided to write this booklet to meet the needs of community groups dealing with immigrations problems for more detailed information In this area. It Is hoped that once a community group has a booklet and is able to review the material, workers will be able to plan educational programmes within their own community. Copies of the booklet are available now and can be obtained by sending a cheque or money order for $4.00 plus 50 c hand-ling charges for each copy, to the Law Union of Ontario, or coming In person to 165 Spadina Avenue, Suite 33 (Spadlna and Queen).
