No Jewish
support
III SI T Тшш
EDITOR'S NOTE:
Dr. Mladen Schwartz,
who claims to be a
Croatian Jew, recently
tried to gain publicity
in the United States
and to attract Jewish
support for the sep-aratist
Croatian causes
by forming the "Jew-ish
Committee for a
free Croatia" and
making himself the
. president. In regard to
Dr. Schwartz's activi-ties
we publish the
following statement
from the Association
of Yugoslav Jews in
the United States,
which
, speaks for
itself.
It has come to our attention that a
Jewish Committee for a free Croatia has
been formed with Dr. Mladen Schwartz
as its first president.
The Association of Yugoslav Jews
in the United States, Inc., established in
1941, is the only organization which is
representative of Jews natives of Yugo-slavia,
including Croatia, one of the six
republics in the Yugoslav Federation,
who were fortunate to escape the U?rror
and the persecution in their native
country during the German occupation,
and as refugees had settled in this
country.
with the Canadian Government
over their declared policies.
We appeal to you, sir, to instruct
the R.C.M.P. to stop this nefarious
practice of McCarthyite listing of
individuals and organizations who-se
only crime is to act in the best
democratic Interests of our coun-try.
We know for a fact that these
lists have been exchanged with the
F.B.I, causing untold hardship to
people who have to cross borders
for family or business reasons.
An assurance from you that this
practice will no longer be tolerated
will be good news to our members
and to most Canadians who do not
want the trappings of a police
state.
Yours sincerely
UNITED JEWISH
PEOPLE'S ORDER
J. Cowan — National President
At a recent press conference at the
Taft Hotel, Dr. Schwartz intended to
create the impression, that some Croatian
Jews, here in the jited States, are join-ing
his Committee in support of a free . Croatia. This is most unlikely. In our
organization no distinction is made
whether one is born in Serbia, Croatia, , Bosnia or in any of the six replublics in
the Yugoslav Federation. We consider
ourselves as natives of Yugoslavia.
Furthermore, no member of our organi-zation
belongs to any political or
ideological movement or, even less, to
any separatistic group in Yugoslavia
or concerning Yugoslavia.
Our contacts with Yugoslavia are '
rather sentimental. Memories, pleasant
and sad, are still part of our lives with
nostalgia and affection for the. native
country. More so, because some of 'our
relatives and some of our good dear
friends live there. Our organization main-tains
close and active relations with the
Federation of Jewish Communities in
Yugoslavia as well as with other or-ganizations
of Yugoslav Jews in Israel
and in the countries of South America.
In his quest of Jewish support of
a free Croatia, Dr. Schwartz is being
wrong believing that he could, as he says,
"dispel the false image which still exists
among the Jews" with regard to the
cataclysmic events of 1941-194- 5 in
Croatia and Bosnia, 'the latter being at
that time, with the help of Nazi-German- y,
incorporated in the Inde-pendent
State of Croatia. Dr. Schwartz
recounts the attrocities against Jews as
"misunderstandings between Croats and
Jews which might have had incon-venienced
some Jews" and which should
be forgotten and forgiven. .. For us, who'have experienced those
"misunderstandings" the terror and re-pression
against Jews and Serbs in Croatia
and Bosnia, ruled, by Ustashi leaders,
Ante Pavelic, Andrija Artukovic and
Kvaternik, are deeply rooted in our.,
memory as the most bestial and shame-lessly
cruel genocide which destroyed the
lives of close to 85% of the Jewish pop-ulatio- n in Yugoslavia, which in April
1941 numbered 75,000. The death
camps in Croatia, Jasenovac, Loborgrad
arid Djakovo, cannot be forgotten, and
it shall never be forgiven.
Dr. Schwartz may be naively
honest in believing that the Croatian
movement for independence of today is
completely and wholly disassociated from

the Ustashi-Croatia- n political party,
terrorists and heinous collaborators of
Nazi-German- y during the World War II,
' as he calls them. But, how could he
explain that the most savage Ustashi
leaders are still being honored and revered
as heroes of the Croatian independence
in publications of the present days
Croatian movement for a free Croatia.
And why his associates are so strongly
committed in defending Andruja Ar-- m
tukovic, the former Minister of the
. Interior of the Ustashi Independent
State of Croatia, identified with utmost
brutality, and who is presently facing
' deportation charges in the United States.
It won't help Dr. Schwartz either
to court Jewish support for his cause
pointing out to the present Yugoslav
Government's stand against Israel and by
presenting the independent Croats as
truly and natural friends of Israel and
the Jewish people. Of course, there is a
strong displeasure among the Jewry with
the Yugoslav Middle-Eas- t policy. How-ever,
and in all fairness, it must be said
that the freedom of Jews in Yugoslavia
is by no means limited in any way. They
are free to organize in Jewish communi-ties
and to engage in activities in order
to preserve their Jewish identity. They
are free to observe Jewish Holidays and
to celebrate Jewish festivals. They even
mark the anniversary of the establish-ment,
of the State of Israel. Responsible
positions in the Government, military,
diplomacy, economy and education are
wide-ope- n to Jews. They can travel
abroad and even emigrate, if they wish so.
Dr. Schwartz statement with re-gard
to Croatian true friendship for
Israel and Jews contradicts the facts
based on our own experience and it is
plain expediency with the purpose to
canvass and to attract Jewish support
for Croatian causes.
These are the reasons why Jews
should not support the movement for a
free Croatia.
