HISTORY
On the 15th and ICth of Decem-ber
trur young-- Canadians of South
Slar'c descent held a constituent
national convention — the first
one in the history of our youth in
Canada — at which all our .vide-]- y
scattered youth clubs officially
constituted themselves into a na-tional
youth Federation. All our
past hopes, for unity amongst our
youth were finally realized at this
cenvention. All those that attend-ed
the conference — delegates
and guests — were very much in-spired
by the reports that were
submitted at the conference and
the discussion that took place.
Here I feel that it is necessary to
g-- o into full detail and to summar-ize
the whole convention, and the
tasks that confronted it.
Early on Friday morning dele-gates
who were representing all
our local club3 arrived so that in
addition to attending the conven-tion
they could also attend a wel-come
party that had been previ-ously
prepared, and held in their
ncnour. Friday night the party
and a dance was held, and all the
delegates had the privilege and
the opport"nity, to acquaint them-selves,
with the rest of the young
people from other localities.
On the following day, the con-vention
was called to order, by the
national chairman, Peter Kloba-ca- rj
he greeted and welcomed the
delegates to the convention and in
his brief speech, ha did not fail to
stress the paramount need for
unity, particularly among young
people — those thit have sacrific-ed
the most in the ttruggle against
Fascism, ftcr electing three
convention chairmen, and three
secretaries, the main report of the
national secretary followed. The
report contained the essence of
the purpose that the convention
was called for, and in it was out-lined
the policy that should be
followed by our national organ!
. zation. The report emphasized j the role that young people have
played in Ihc struggle against

tional organization, such as the
one that wo have established,
young people jointly and through
co-ordina- ted efforts, would be
enabled to raise their voice on all
rational issues that are of con-cern
and of. interest to them.
Through a national organization,
and co-operati- on with other
democratic local and national or-ganizations,
youth will be able to
play a significant part in the for-mulating
of national policies.
Youth has fought for that right
nnd youth must be granted that
justified demand. Youth has
fought for the right to play a lead-ing
role in shaping the future of
Canada, and their justified de-mnn- ds
must be granted to them.
Millions of young people rade the
supreme sacrifice In order to save
civilization from complete des-truction,
and to save humanity
from Fascist slavery and barbar-ism.
If young people were able
to struggle and to die In the bat-tle
against Fascist military forces,
they certainly can and must play
a prominent role in all national
issues that are of cencern to them.
The Federation which was estab-lished
by our national convention
will at all times strive to advance
such interest of youth.
The report clearly explained the
need for unity, in. the struggle for
the complete defeat ef the rem-man- ts
of Fascism, and its advoca-tes
adherents and spokesmen, who
occupy responsible positions right
here in our own country of Cana-da,
and in other parts oi the
world. Unity aлd co-operat- ion
was particularly stressed, in order
to save our and the future
generations, from complete dis-traction
especially now that we
are Ihing in the atomic energy
era. In the main report co-operat- ion
was stressed with all possible
democratic organizations, so that
the demand of young people
would have more effect and force.
The report stated that our nation-al
organization must be an inde-pendent
one; it must be an organ-ization
which will be maintained
by youth and led by democratical-ly
elected young people on the
national leadership. Into our
ranks we welcome all those demo-cratic
and freedom-lovin- g young
people, who are 'frilling to join us
and to "crk 'ri'h i ihe In-terests
of freedom, progress and
democracy. Regardless of religi-ous
or political trends of thought,
that democratic youth possesses,
our aims are one and the same.
Social and cultural activities
were outlined and' discussed. Re

solutions were unanimously adopt
ed, in which we have undertaken
to organize sports of all kinds,
such as baseball, soft and hard-ball,
bowling, hockey, foot-ba- ll
and others which are too numer-ous
to enumerate.
After the main report was sub-mitted,
discussion took place and
after the discussion ceased, local
reports were given by the leaders
of delegations of every locality.
Young men and women, as low of
an ago as 1C, gave reports which
astonished our guests, regarding
the ability of our youth. Our
young Canadians of South Slavic
descent, have proved at our con-stituent
convention that they are
not only socially developed, but
also politically. For the first time,
our youth has met and jointly they
discussed their problems, to enable
them to find a practical solution
for everyone of them. At this con-vention
our youth has displayed
its ability, not only to our parents
and guests, but we also have set
an example to other young people
throughout Canada, by being the
first language group to constitute
itself into a national Federation.
In the near future, we hope that
others will follow our example
and towards this end our Federa
tion will extend to them all our
possible support. At our conven-tion,
our youth has proven that
they possess the initiative to plan,
to call and to conduct a conven-tion.
During the day, telegrams were
received In which various organi
zations, not only in Canada, but
also America, greeted our youth,
and in which our friends and de
mocratic organizations, wished
our convention all possible suc-cess.
Telegrams were received
from our youth club In Vancouver,
B. C. in which they expressed their
regret for their inability to at-tend
the conference. A letter was
read, which has been recived from
Slavko Komar, leader (of the Yu-goslav
youth. For the first time
in the history of our youth in Ca
nada, we have finally forged a
y°ulh ot Yugoslavia. Along
with the letter we have also re-ceived
a large box of the official
organ of the United League of
Anti-Fasci- st Youth of Yugoslavia,
called "OMLADINA" (Youth).
Many delegates came to greet
the convention and to express
their desire for success and here
duo to the lack of printing space
we cannot mention the names of ,
the fraternal delegates, but we
can mention that Raymond Arthur
Davies, Canada's foreign corres-pondent,
— just returned from
Yugoslavia — a man who has
seen the Fascist murder camps in
Europe and in other parts of the
world, greeted, and spoke to us.
On Saturday all the committees
were elected, and after the after-noon
session adjourned, these com-mittees
retired into closed session.
The Constitution committee work-ed
on the constitution and the by-laws;
the Greetings and Resolu-tions
committee worked on the
greetings and resolutions, and the
Auditing committee immediately
convened to audit the books of the
national office.
On the following day — Sun-day
— during the morning session,
the chairmnn of each committee,
submitted a report on the particu-lar
field of work that his, or her
committee, has been elected to
work upon. The chairman of the
constitution committee, Mary Rud-nick- i,
reported on the constitution.
The constitution was read, discus-sed,
and in some parts amended,
and it was finally adopted. Up to
the time of our convention, our
organization was bearing the
name of: The Canadian Yugoslav
Youth Movement, and now after
being approved by the supreme
body — the convention — it bears
the name of: Canadian South-Slavi- c
Youth Federation. A little
discussion took place on the name
that we should assume, and it was
agreed by all the delegates, that
the entrance doors to our organi-zation
must be open to as many
sections of young people as poss-ible,
an! Ihus the convention ap-proved
the above name. Every
article and section, was read and
seperately voted upon, and finally
the whole constitution, as amend-ed
has been adopted by the con-vention.
After the constitution was

lutlons and greeting committer,
Mary Kosmrl reported; a large
number of resolutions were draft-ed
and adopted, among them being
the 18 year-ol- d vote, atomic bomb
diplomacy, membership campaign,
and many others. During the read-- 1
ling of the resolutions dealing with
a campaign for new members,
great enthusiasm arose from the
delegates; considerable discussion
took place, and every locality
challenged another. The resolu-tion
w-а- з adopted; the campaign is
to begin on January 1st, and it is
to last until March the 1st. Our
objective is 300 new members.
Every one of our localities, will
endeavor to beat the other in this
campaign, and through healthy
competition such as this, as some
of the delegates expressed their
opinion, we will not only get 300
new members but we will reach
the neighbourhood of бОО.
Some time later the Auditing
committee reported that all the
books of the national office were
found in good order.
During the day the nomination
committee retired into session,
after nominations were democra-tically
made directly from the
convention floor. After the session
the committee recommended the
national leadership of our Federa-tion
to the convention, and a de-mocratic
vote took place on every
person that now holds a respons-ible
position on the national exe-cutive
and on the national commit
tee.
The following have been elected
to their respective position.:
Supreme President, Nick Asich;
first Supreme Vice-Preside- nt,
Mary Kosmcrl; second Supreme
Vice-Preside- nt, Nick Rukavina;
third Supreme Vice-Preside- nt,
Danton Geamon; National Secret
ary Emeric Simac. Three members
of the National Executive are:
Mary Rudnicki, Ivonne Mataja,
and Peter Grbelja.
It was decided by the conven-tion
that the National Committee
should consist of one representa-tive
from every club, of our na-tional
Federation. The only two
clubs that were not represented
are: Sault Ste. Marie, and Van-couver,
due to soma circumstances.
The convention discussed this mat-ter,
and power was given to the
National Executive to co-o- pt one
member from each one of the
above clubs to the National Com-mittee.
Those that have been elect-ed
to the national committee arc:
Louis Kozlovich, from Toronto;
Dominic Frgacich, from Montreal;
Mary Slak, from Timmins; Olga
Drelick, from Hamilton; Bill Kus-turi- n,
from Kirkland Lake; Steve
Niksich, from Windsor; Dianne
Driski, from Sudbury; Mary Sta--
nich, from Welland; Madelline
Rubick, from Schumacher; and
Zilba George from the Macedonian-Bul-garian
club of Toronto.
That is the structure, and com-position
of the National leadersnip
of our Federation.
Sirce our Leys of the Canadian
Armed Forces, have played a pro-minent
role in the struggle against
Fascism, we all felt that they
should be entitled to play a lead-ing
part in our national Federa-tion.
Power w-а- з given by the con-vention
to the National Executive,
to co-o-pt four returned veterans
into the national leadership, of
our organization. The delegates
unanimously felt that if our boys
are able to sacrifice their lives for
their country, they certainly are
able, and entitled to play a signi-ficant
and a leading role in our
organization.
In the resolutions that have
been adopted at the convention,
we have undertaken to organize
orchestras, choires, sports of all
kinds and study classes. Perhaps
one of the most interesting fact-ors
for many of our members,
that were discussed, were sports.
We have undertaken, and we shall
strive at all times, to organize,
iiot only club sports, but inter-localit- y,
and perhaps in the very
near future, inter-provinc- ial
sports also. There is no doubt
that these activities, in addition
to social and cultural, would in-terest
everyone.
Our corvention has discussed
the possibility to establish an
organ of its own, which would be
printed once or perhaps twice
monthly. Some uuve suggested
that a monthly magruine be set
up, of some fifteen pages, which
would contain articles written by
the members of our Federation.
To achieve this, we shall devote
all our attention, and energy.

vention adjourned, all the deleg-ates
left in very high spirit, and
with resolved determination to
apply all our decisions into actual
practice.
