May Have 8 Plays
The 1963 Piitnish Cslnadian Drama
Festival in Sudbury, on Easter
Week-end could possibly have up
to 8 plays in the two' day pro
gramme. With half of them in eng-lish.
This would be the first time
that the festival programme was
this 50—50 ratio. -
Another new feature of the fes­tival
is the pfoduction of two origi-nai
plays, by Toronto. The plays
are '!The Greatest Man in the
World" by R. Laakso and "Th*»
Coiiipact FämilyV by W. Bohm. "The
Greatest Man in the .World" is a
fast moving satire on contemporary
American society re^olving ^around-a
Space flight to ÄeMoon. The
Compact Family" is a historical
drama set in To^nto shortly after
the MacKenzie upi^ising in 1837.
'l'he\two plays themselves present
ah interesting contrasi in types of
6ne act plays.
^ Two of the plays from Sudbury
are "Kadulle" and "Hurskas Isä
ja Iloinen Tytär" The former is
a social drama directed by a vete-ran
of our stage, Edwin Suksi. The
other is a light comedy, with a
very wen known east and directed
by another veteran of the Finnish
Canadian stage mrs. Aino LahtL

, On Monday, March 25, the CBC-TV Netork presented an «xcellent
Production of Bertolt Brechfs play "Galileo". Af ter thousands of
hours of mediocre horse- and hypo-operas, "Galileo" restored a great
deal of our faith in TV. We are ready to admit that it is likely here
to stay. ' .
i Not-'only is the play rich in content, but the standard of pro-duction
was equal tq the best. Our directors, actors, scenic artists,
designers etc. are as good as any in the world. Given the opportunity
to prove themselves Canadian artists always come out on top.
But the opportunities for the developments of Canadian TV are
limited by the dollar. Both the LiberaFs and Coiiservative's have
not been too keen to provide the necessary funds to develop a truly
Canadian TV. Insteadthey teli the CBC to go out into the rat race
of Commercial broadcasting to raise the extra monies it need. If it
earns "too" much, the government takes the excess away. Just to
make things a bit tougher and kow-tow to the free-enterprizers, the
government allowed a second private TV network to cut into what
monies the CBC might getfrom the advertisers. To compete the
CBC is forced to pick up US shows, and program largely according
to what their advertisers demand.
Monday's Production was a good example of what we think Can-adien
TV viewers would be ready to receive more. We think that this
is possible too if we raise ()ur voices to keep Canadian Radio & Tele­vision
f o r C a n a d i a n s and not for the interests of large cor-porations
who care little what type of garbage programming they
associate their names with, as long as they sell their soaps or fags
or what have you.
How tq keep our Radio & TV Canadian? More productions like
"Galileo"—thafs how.
SUURJUHLAT HAVE
BEGUN - IN TO. ANYWAY
Toronto. — With the 1963 Suur­juhlat
only a few months away;
preparation are in fuU swing in
Toronto as was evident at the last
Suurjuhlat Committee meeting held
on March 18th. Reports were made
from the various sub-committees,
and the Suurjuhlat Committee was
very pleäsed to hear just how
much progress had already been
made! There is certainly no doubt
abouit it in my mind —•this is
going to bev,the"greatest". There
seems to be some pretty strong op­position
to the use of the word
"greatest", SO perhaps I had bet-ter
say "even better" or something
like that. O.K. Matti? Kidding aside,
F guess it can be left unsaid since
I am sure we ali feel that we want
each year to be a little better than
the year before. This is what makes
our Juhlas SO special — everyone
ti7ing a little harder to make it
a little better.
During the course of discussion,
a motion was passed that the Suur
juhla Committee hold acabaret as
a sort of warm-up for the Suur­juhla.
Annikki and the Manninen
boys liave been asked to play, and
fortunately for us they have con-sented
to do so. Although I haven't
any official word on it yet, we also
asked them to play for us during
the Suurjuhlat dances and it looked
pretty promising that they wouId.
If you haven't had the pleasure
of dancing to their music, you're in
for quite a- treat. You name it and
they can play it. And I mean real-ly
play it. So we're keeping our
fingers crossed that they will ac-cept
— but nevertheless they will
be playing at this our preview ca-baret.
The date — April 5th. And
since it is a Friday, we can dance
until 1 o'clock. That one extra
hour's dancing seems to cap the
evening just fine, don't you think?
Now, we've taken care of the
music, the time, the working staff,
etc. and ali we need to make this
cabaret is YOU. How about it —
doesn't it sound inviting? This will
be the last cabaret this season and
i f l l give you a good chance to
shake offthose Winter blues and
flus and latch on to some of that
Spring fever thats flying around.
I know it's a sign of old age v—
when you start reminiscing about
the old days that is — but I just
started to think of some of the
good times we've had at the Hall,
and Td like to throw out a challenge
to some of you old Sneeze-Mobbers
whom ;we haven't seen around
for awhile. Just how long has it
been since you've been to a.dance
at the Hall? One yea, two, five —
more? Terrible isnt it. Weil, now's
your chance to come out and rah-rah-
rah it for the Old "Alma mater".
How about some of you out of
towners? Now that Spring is here,
the weather is just right for a little
travelling, Here's your chance to do
a little visiting and a little party-ing
at the same time. Isn't that so,
Torontonians?
Lefs really make this Cabaret a
tremendous success — as big a
success as our Suurjuhlat will be.

Excitement and enthusiasm is
rapidly rising among the younger
members of our clubs. The'wheels
have been spun and are bringing
forth new ideas f or . our coming
concert. I will not teli you our sec-rets
for this concert since we hope
to surprise our audience. Again I
remind you to watch your paper
for the general details on this mat-ter.
Our Thursday night practises
have been set ahead one half Jiour
Isecause one of our assistants is
busy later on in the evening. So,
until Unto Penttinen is freedjfrom
the duties of play director, we will
meet at the Finnish hali at 7.00
P.M.
For the past weeks, we have
been devoting our evenings mainly
to matwork, warmups and the furi-damentals
of gymnastics. Although
we have not the equipment at pre­sent,
we are working towards bas
ketball, indoor track and volleyball.
Although we have new forces at
the practices we are very: disap-pointed
to note.tbat some members
of years before are not taking part.

countries will visit Stratford this
summer to take part in the 1963
Shakespeare Seminars, to be held

Levin, Irving Babbit Professor of
Comparative Literature at Hai-vard
University and Clifford Leech, Pro

to take part in the lectures and
discussions sponsored by the Uni-versities
of Canada and the Strat­ford

sydänhalvaukseen. Hän oli syntynyt Suomessa 1909, elokaan'8"pnä.
~ Lähinnä suremaan_jäin minä, yksi veli Snomessa ja saari ystävä
ja toveripiiri tässä maassa.
Vainaja saatettiin Pine Hillin haataasmaahan 26 pnä helmikaata.
Sydän sammui, kesken elon
parhaan,
vaan muistosi elää
Ja minua seuraa;
siis nuku unta, niin rauhaisaa.
