~Do you remember that fitst Liitto-
Juhla trip? Tliat was a real balll
Boy did we have fun. Imagin^e sleep-ing
thxee in one bed at the place
where we were bllleted. S<Hne of the
fellows were even lucky enough io be
able to sleep on the floor. But that
was really some Liittojuhlat. They
dont came like that anymore. There
are 160 of us in the mass gym. The
kids nowadays dont know what. a
real mass gym group looks like. And
the athletes who took part in the
championship meet! Why some of
them were just aboqt as goöd as the
best in the whole of Canada. They
Jigt dont came like that anymuore.
The events themselves •were really a
sight to watch, not like the stuff you
see now. Some pf qur boys won
medals and we vowed to train hard
and then brlng the team championship
home when we grew up.
Do you remember that siunmer we
went out to the park two and three
nif^ts a Week to traln? There was
no sla<&lng then. When we were
finished it was an effort to even sit
down and relax. The kids now just
cann taketrainlng like that. And
those meets we had that summer.
•Remember the races and how close | there hasnt been another one like it
they ali were. How about the time
wh€n three of us came within a frac-tion
of a point to each other in the
three event. Boy, and that time when
we ali entered the open class five
event to liven up the competition.
Those were the days. We even went
to ali the other country points and
held meets on Sundays when there
wasn't anything going on at the park.
Do you remember the work we did
getting ready for the LUttoJuhlat
which were sponsored by our club for
the first tinie. That was really back
breaking toil. The youngsters now
wouldnt, believe what a forest there
was where the south end of the track
is located. Those "talkoot" were the
real McCoy. You could just see the
thing shpping up amidst ali the men
and machinery running at peak capa-city.
We used td get out to the park
at 5:30 in the mornings and quite
often it was dark when we went
home. There was no fooling around.
Everyone worked for ali they were
worth. Remember the relaxation of
taking a steambath at the day's end,
and then a dip in the creek.
Do you remember those Liittojuhlat
the following summer? They were
the biggest and best ones ever staged
— cvcryono agreed to that. And
The Post Mortem
m
The Easter weekend in Sudbury was a busy time. The
occasion, of course, was the Annual Drama Festival of the
Finnish Organization. If our reckoning is correct, this was
the sixth festival that has been held and our personal opinion
is that it was definitely the best in ali respects worth men-tioning.
We have never had so many plays at earlier festi-vals
and the quality of productions was generally very good.
We were certainly very pleased with the way things
went and are anxiously looking forvvard to the next one.
Wbere it ^11 be held;"we do not know, because partidpants
in the festival have strongly suggested that it should not be
limited to Sudbury and Toronto. It has also been suggested
again that d ^ i t e the f act that most dr^ma festivals are held
in early spring, we should hold our festival in the fall, poss-ibly
utilizing the Thanksgiving week-end. The motive be-hind
this suggestion has been the fact that the Finnish Halls
in most centres are very biisy places during February and
March and it is difficult to rehearse plays properly and
deyote sufficient time to them. On the other hand, in,the
fall, there is very little going on and there is ample space
available. The festival could become the beginning of dra-matic
activities for the season and could create even more
intierest in drama than has been the experience of the past
when the festivals have .been held to möre or less wind up
dramatic activities for the season.
The question of competition has also been the centre of
discussion. At ali previous festivals a winning play has been
selected and the east has been awarded the John Salo chal-lenge
trophy. This year it was decided to dispense with
the competition between plays and simply award Oscars to
the best actor and actress and consolation awards to the
runners-up. This was done in the hope of getting the smaller
centres to participate. It is generally conceded that it is
much more difficult for them to compete for the best play
award than it is for a group irom Toronto or Sudbury. It
was also felt that there would be more inexperienced actors
and actresses involved if the competition was restricted to
individual awards.
We have seen both systems in effect and it is up to
everybody involved in the festivals to give some serious
thought to the matter and arrange discussions on these ques-tions.
The national executive is anxious to hear ali opinions,
so that a decision can be made on these points in the near
future.
We have often mentioned that a great deal of thought
should be given tb choosing a good play. We are still of the
same opinipn and it would seem that the audience response
was much better to good plays, despite language problems,
than to run of the mill plays.
We were particularly impressed by the three Toronto
plays. They were very well done and ali the plays were
very successfuUy written. Obviously,__the casts had done a
great deal of work to get rid of the wrinkles and had suc-ceeded
admirably.
On the other hand, we saw a ntimber of Finnish comedies
very Weil presented buflhe over ali effect was not nearly
as good as with plays having a realistic content and a message.
When we prepare for the next festival, we should try to
kecp this in mind and the selection of a play should not be
left to an individual, it should be don(p coUectively by the
whole group and it would also broaden our understanding
of drama.
This year was the first time that the festivals have been
bpen to adult groups. There was some fear expressed that
the inclusion of aduits would mean the exclusion of young
people, but it would seem that there is no such a danger.
We had some excellent performances from the younger gene-ration
and many young people worked hand in hand with the
afiult.
As a matter of fact the young people are obviously very
capable of competing with the aduits, because the two main
awards were given to young people.
Lefs keep up the good work and one of the first steps
is to arrange a discussion on the numerous points raised in
this article and at the meeting during the festival,
since. Do you remember the truck-loads
of food and bedding we took
to the park. "Unload one stack of
stuff and rush back for another pile.
How about the meetings just prior to
the big event. We used to meet once
and sometimes tvvice a day, even in
the small hours of the morning.
Those Old guys would slow up the
works always by talklng about festivals
long passed in which nobody
was interested. The important thing
was what was happening then. What
was gone was gone, and just a w^aste
of time to remember it.
Do you remember how we actually
detested those people who did noth-ing
but speak of things they remem-t>
ered? That was when we decided it
was time the young' people started
running the show. Do you remember?
I wonder if you really do.

CENTENNIAL CENTRE OF
ACTIVITIES IN B. C.
Vancouver. — Out here in Vancouver
the activities of Finnish-
Canadians both young and old äre

around the B.C. Centennial. We
have our own centennial committee
\vhich meets regularly every wed-nesday
night at the Clinton Hall
and ali interested people are in-vited
fo join in the discussions of
the committee.
Över the Easter wcek-end we had
a real gala affair consisting of a
concert and dance on Saturday
night with music by Ronnie Pajala
and on Sunday we had a play "Song
of the Red Roses".
The next affair being planned un-der
the auspices of the centennial
committee is a Finnish-Canadian
Youth Concert sometime in May. It
w i l l be a special concert organized
by our young people and featuring
many of our younger artists. It will
be as a tribute to the Finnish-Cana-dian
pioneers of British Columbia.
Allan Vestei-back is the one to
contact if you want to get in on
the fun.
The next thing^^vill be "Life in
the Finland Woods" on Mäy 31st.
It wiU be an cvening of old fa<;hio-ned
fun when the English speaking
members ofjpur committee organize
music, food, and entertainment in
a manner thafs reminiseent of the
way in v h i c h the pioneers enjoyed
themselves both in the Old Country
and here in Canada.
There are a niullitude of activities
around the Hall that rrtany,
many people are enjoying very
much. The main groups at this time
are the Women s Choir, the Folk
Dance Group, the Men's Choir and
the orchestra. Everybody is wel-come
to participate in the^activities
of these groups.
The Centennial has also prompted
the committee" tö iniliate a po.ster
and a vvriting competition, which is
divided into two classes; those 14
years of under on .luno Ist 1958 and
those older than H . ,
In both cases the theme must be
"Scandinavians in British Columbia",
although the contestants can
live in Toronto or Sudbury aj far
as we are concerned. And there are
prizes too. Our committee will be
giving prizes of $10.00 — $5.00 and
$3.00 to the three best and ali the
ontries \vill be submitted in the
Scandinavian Central Committee
Coiitest where the prizes are .$25.00
— S 15.00 and $10.00.
The posters must be at least
15x15 inches and th^ stories less

to mark their age on the entry.
The stories may be fictional or

Hello Setä.
How are you? I am fine and so

The day after tomorrow our Easter

a holiday. But when we go back to
school our exams will begfai. We will

I'll have to study a lot.
On Saturday, March 22nd. we went
to the 'Finnish Hall Iri Webster's
Corners for Juntunen's and Strom's
twenty-fifth anniversarles. Many
people were there and we ali had a
good time. Both Juntuneh's and
Strom's knew there was golng to be
a party at the Hall, but Strom's
thought it was for Juntunen's and
Jimtunen's 'thought it waa for
Strom's. SO they vere really surprlsed.
On Tuesday, March 18, Mrs. Anne
Puska of Webster's Comers passed
away in St. Paul's Hospital, Vancouver.
She suffered a heart ättack.
She was a good friend of ours and
would have been sixty-eight on the
following Sunday. Mrs. Puska was
buried In the Maple Rldge Cemetery.
The new Maple Rldge Hospital Is
running very smoothly. They have
had over 120 patients by now. My
girlfriend's mom is there.
On Sunday. March 23rd. Evelyn
Ahvenus, Mrs. Vesa and I went with
the Soderholm's to Horseshoe Bay
and Stanley Park. We went through
North Vancouver to Horseshoe Bay
and on our way back to Stanley Park
we took the Upper Level Highway.
The scenery at Horseshoe Bay and
from the highway was just splendld.
The view consisted of the Pacific
Ocean. mountains and forests. What's
more, the weather was nlce too. Stanley
Park was beautiful also. Many
trees which flowers were in bloom
•snd the north shore mountains in
the background made it a photo-
?rapher's paradise.
Last Friday we had a locker check
at school. Mme wasn't too bad, but
some lockers were really messy.
Yesterday was April Fool's Day.
I didn't play any exceptional tricks
on anybody at home, but we sure got
busy^^at school before the teacher
came. When I walked into our class-room
yesterday moming, a strange
sight greeted me. Ali the desks were
turned around backwards and the
«rastepaper basket was upslde down
on a chair on the teacher's desk. AU
the rooms in our school were ta the
wildest disorder. During the first
period our science teacher Mr. Nelson
bent over to pick up a piece of chalk
from the floor and just as he was
bent over one of the pupils tore a
piece of cloth. lie actually thought
his trousers had ripped and he tumed
ali red.
The weather sure is nice. AU the
ti-ees have buds or tiny leaves on
them and soon they wUl be out In

days is very high. usually around 65
degrees at the hlghest. Our Japanese

Dear Setä!
How are you? 1 am fine. We had
a lot of fun at school on Friday the
28th. We had a meeting and a
program for the Red Cross and we
went up to the seniors' room and
watched their program. Then when
their program was over, their
teacher Mr. Montgomery had some
tricks to show us. The tricks in-clud^
d pinning a cup to the wall,
how to join two pieces of materia!
togettier, hypnotizing one of us and
one of the girls was asked to hyp-notize
him. He, also showed how
pepper can be separated from sait
with a comb.
Then we went into our room and
Miss Love came to teach us how to
make maple syrup and when she
was finished we were dismissed. We
went to.the bus and went home.
When I got home I fed the pigs,
sows and the horse. I also fed my
goat because I can't forget her. I
fed them because daddy, mom and
Sylvia were in Sudbury. -After
school I was home ali by myself.
They didn't get home until six o'-
clock.
Sylvia is just doing her home-work
and she wants us ali to be
quiet because she can't think if we
make noise. Daddy is glad that the
bus can come to our gate and we
can get to school.
I am happy that we are having
our Easter holidays and we can
have fun. Rita and I will go to Jac-queline's
place and we will have fun
there. Thafs ali in English for now
and I will write the rest in Finnish.
Kuinka mummo voi siellä New
Liskeardissa? Sylvia paahtaa pop
cornia ja pian saadaan niitä maistaa
kun ne kuuluvat paukkuvan.
I was helping daddy to load logs
on the truck. I was driving the
tractor and daddy was putting the
chains on the logs and placing them
on the truck. I helped with the
chains too, but I thought it would
be enough if I just 'drove the tractor.
Sometimes l would,get of f and
help to lift them closer on the pile.
Dadd^ drove the truck to the road
and went to the house to eat his
supper. When he looked out at the
truck, guess what he saw? He saw
a cat climbing up the side pf the
truck to get on the load. When the
cat come down he left his tracks in
the snow. He also left tracks ali
over the front of the cab.
Going to school we have to walk
from Miron's field which is about
ä half a mile. Soon we win have
to walk from the big hill which is
about three quarters of a mile.

Haloo tytöt ja pojat!
Nyt ollaan keskellä pääsiäislomaa
ja kaikki lapset ovat tietysti mielissään
siitä kun saavat olla pois koulusta
viikon päivät. Aikuiset eivät
nauti niin pitkästä lomasta, mutta
melkein kaikki saivat olla pois tehtävistään
viime perjantaina, eU pitkänä
perjantaina. Setäkin sai nauttia siitä,
joten lomaa oli kaikkiaan kolme
päivää peräkkäin. Maanantaina oli
kuitenkin taas palattava työn pariin.

talvitakkeja. MÄutama päivä aikaisemmin
oli niin lämmintä, että Setäkin
maalasi venettä ulkona lämpöisessä
auringon paisteessa.
Täällä Sudburyn lähellä tapahtui
toista viikkoa sitten ikävä onnettomuus
kun kaksi pientä poikaa hukkui
lammikkoon. Nyt onkin oltava varovainen
jäiden suhteen, sillä jää alkaa
olla heikkoa eikä kenenkään pitäisi
enää kulkea Jäillä, muuten voi tapahtua
onnettomuus.

Reniember the Old Days - What Has Happened to Them?
Begina. — -This article is dedicated
to those of my acqualntances who are
llterate. If you don't f ali into that
catogory I would ask you to read no

j Do you remember the fine times
jne had about a decade ago when we
Vere Just tads growing up 'and still
golng to School? Those were the days
} when we would ali pile into the back
pf a truck or inside a decrepit diesel
jt>us and then raise a wonderfully loud
jjin vhile being driven out to the
park. And do you remember the f un
we had a^ the swimming hole whUe
the aduits were listening to some dull
'((oncert or watching a tedious track
|[MBet? Of course our day was some-
; jpmes partly spoiled by the heavy
hand of authority which forced us to
/(iiarry moimtainous quantities of fuel
Wood to the kitchen, and with no
. tnore than two bottles of pop each
as a reward.
iDo you remember the vonderful
escapades -when we got Just a Ilttle
pider and started taking part in mass
'Hym and going out to the track and
i i e l d practices on fine summer even-ings?
The nights when we appeared
at concerts were really terrific. The
audience used to love those whlte
irousers and red sashes. And the
; ftdiventures one could get into back
;-:stage or upstairs in the prop room
1 — or better still while climbing the
Jieathly high catwalks overlooking
the stage. Those track and field
meets weren't bad either. Ali the
Jkids got prizes \vhether they won or
- not. and iree pop for everybody.
iphce in a wliile you actually felt like
•Tunning and Jumping to beat heck.
Do you remember the firat time you
actually listened' to what someone
A^as saying at a meeting. instead of
• Bhooting spitballs at the guy oppo-i
Älte? And then came the time wben
döclded that club «rauld

: itarted paying attention at the meet-
•Ings that sprhig and summer or at
leastyou did for the fir?t half hour
or SO. After the meeting evecyone
:(not including the old fogies) agreed
it vas a waste of time to listen to
