HOW DO FR£GKLES FORM?
Now that the summer sun will be
shining down on our hatless heads
most of the day many of us Jt>reak
out in freckles. And of course, we
of ten wonder why this should be so,
and ask ourselves the above ques-tion.
The answer is that freckles, of
course, are caused by sunshine. You
might say that each one of the
pretty brown spots is the result of
kiss from an affectionate sunbeam:
The sunshine stirs a brownish pig-mentvvhich
is normälly buried in
deep layers of the skin. The pig-ment
then comes to the surface
where it can be seen and some
lucky person becomes the owner of
a freckle.
The skin is a great deal more
than a thin jacket to cover the bady,
It is a complex organ with many
duties to perform. It has oil glands
and sweat glands and tiny roots
which can grow hairs.
SENSE OF TOUCH
7"It'has'blood vessels and nerves,
some of which give up the s ^ e of
touch. In thickness, it varies from
one-sixth to one-fif tieth of an inch.
The outer layer of skin, called the
epidermis, is a thin tissue' o{ cells
which constantly flake away!, The
working skin is the dermis, Or lower
layer.
In the dermis there is a brown
pigment called melanin and dark
people have more melanin than
blond people. The kiss of a gentle
sunbeam brings a gob of melanin up
f ram the dermis to the epidermis
where it can be seen< as a f reckle.
If fades when the epidermis cells
flake away and are replaced by neW
cells .grown by the dermis.
Freckles are beauty spots and
any boy or giri who feels ashamed,
annoyed or embarrassed because of
these beauty spots is making a sad
mistake.

I am an fnsect that Canadian farmers like. I lay my
eggs near the eggs of other harmful insects. When my
larvae hatch ou^ they feed upon the larvae of enemy
insects.
I have very long legs and antennae. By the way, I am
nbt really a fly. Fm a member of the wasp and bee family.
