No, wi'ong. Its tjie town baths

When I first saw it, I thought it

^ No, there is the Community

too ugly either, though of later construction.
But it is too small for

That is just it. They do. There

Editorial
Hope springs eternal in the human breast!
Years have gone by since the first YouthSection of the
Vapaus, was published—many, many years. Since then the
Vapaus whichwas originally established as a means of Communication
and enlightenment for the Finnish immigrant
population, has gone through a variety of stages—ups and
downs. .•:
The English section dedicated to the o'f f spring of these
immigrant workers has also seen similar variations in its
lot. There havie been times when the youth of our country
was busily engaged in other activities and did not have time
for such "mundane" matters as the enlivenment of that section
of this paper that was published for their exclusive use.
We might even call that the "lost" generatioh as far as
the paper was concerned.
' But now, as we have already stated, hope springs eternal
. . . and there is definite proof that our stand (that the
tide will turn and the offspring of our immigrant fathers
will once again^^turn to the Vapaus to use it for their own
benefit and interests) vi^ill in ali likelyhood be vindicated._j::;
We are particularly pleased by the f act that the number
of our correspondents has grown and that the items they
have submitted prove beyond the shadow of a doubt that
there is a definite trend tovv^ards more activity in sports and
other cultural fields.
In > Short, we have great faith in the coming gener?ition.
Lets just have more of it!
YRITYS AO MEMBERS PREPARING
FOR THEIR ANNUAL CONCERT
Toronto. — Don Hall is a beehive
of activity these days. By the time
this appears in print the rehearsals
and performances of the Inspector
General (for which we hope to
haVe a critical analysis in Club
Neyvs) will have been completed;
Nonetheless the hali will remain a
busy place becäuse preparations
are being made för the Yritys A.C.
annual concert and cabaret dance,
scheduled for the weekend of Mar.
17—18.
This will be the highlight of the
winter's activities so far as "Yritys
is concerned.
Festivities get under way with a
c^haret dance on Saturday, March
16, 9-^12 pm. For the early birds
the refreshment bar will open at
8. Feature of the evening will be a
floor show based on either a Ha-waiian
or Jamaican theme. This is
being arranged by womens' gym
instructor Dolores Niskanen. So
come and dance to the tunefui music
of the Annikki Vickman trio.
The other two members of this neat
coinbo are Mervin and Melvin Manninen.
Sunday, March 17 at 4 p.m. is
the date and time of the Yritys
Annual Concert. This year will be
the 57th birthday of Yritys. Guest
performers will be the Slovak folk
dance group.
One of the main attractionswiIl
be a big dance production by the
Yritys *Rromen called "Finlandia in
Abstraot." This is being done in
modern dance form and will be of
some six minutes duration. Other
concert humbers by the Yritys wo-men
will include a folk dance, a
gay carousel waltz, as well as gym
numbers. There will be some child-rens'
program and vocal\and .in-strumentai
-solos. It is' certafnly''
shaping upto be a very complete
and well-balapced concert program.
AU riiembers, former members
and friends in the Toronto area are
cordially asked to come to both the
dance and.concerti We also take this
opportunity of inviting those members
who have dropped out of our
club activities to come back into
the f Old, and as always, new members
are most welcome. Because the
Suurjuhlas are in Toronto this year,
there will be lots of work for every-one,
new and old members alike.
Also on the Yritys agenda is the
preparation of one and possibly
two, one-act plays in English for
the competitions in Sudbury Easter
weekend. — E. M.
F. S. It is good to see new people
writing to Club News from the
Sudbury-Whitefish area. Lets ex-pand
it so that people from ali
Liitto clubs write in regularly.
This will make Club News ali the

again, and we hope to have sorae-one
from the club contribute something
in this column each week,
recounting our activities.
Last Thursday we had a hectic
time, but fun, playing Dodge the
Ball (it's good for the figure) for
about an hour. Then we had fif-teen
minutes of warm ups, though
I think everyone was pretty well
warmed up from dodging around
the hali earlier.
This was followed'by a brief
meeting during which it was decided
that ä 10c admission fee will
be eharged and that this money
will be used to buy shields for
the Windows SO that we can start
playing basketball.
The finishing touches were also
put on the Alerts & Visa A.C.
Toboggan party. It was short no-tice,
granted, but T was really sur-prised
to see the number of kids
who were out to enjoy themselves,
big and little alike. It was held
at the Wanup Hall on Sunday af-ternoon,
March 2nd. I think everyone
had toboggans, skis or flying
saucers, and some of the giris even
had big sheets of cardboard with
which to slide down that steep
hill that is a preli^e to the finish
line on the ski trail. They claim
it wasn't really good sliding wea-ther,
but 1 don't know. When I
was coming down one of the ski
hills, one of my skis must have
figured the skiing conditions per-fect
because it took of f on its own
accord and left me sitting near the
top of the hill to watch it glide
gracefuUy down. RIGHT to the
bottom. One consolation, the wea-ther
was the best, nice and sunny
and warm, but the snow was wet.
(I know.) . —
We had a record player going
ali afternoon and everyone had an
enjoyable time doing the twist,
poika, waltz schottische, and pony
(eh?) Yes, it's a dance. Oh well...
There was plenty of hot coffee
and hot dogs for the slightly wet
sliders and skiers when they came
in. Like to thank Visa A.C. for the
cake and milk that was donated.
Also many thanks to the adults who
were out to give us a hand and
Special thanks to Astrid Salo who
warmed up the hali for us and
kept the cof fee hot ali afternoon.
(Won*t say anything to the girls
in the kitöhen though, that was ex-pected
of them but the service wa5

Is Professionalism
Ruining Sports?
Whitefish. — One of the greatest
pastimes of our age is sports. Sports
act as a social and cultural link be-tween
the nations of the world.
Many sports began in the back-woods
of pioneer days, and today
they may wellbe a national pas-time.
In Its beginnings sports offer-ed
an outlet in which to enjoy one-self;
Everyone participated for the
sheer spillsand thrills of recreation-al
overtones. No one ever thought
of adopting sports as work or as a
means of support. However, today,
many look upon sports an an active
way of' life, as a basic 'job.'
The days have long passed since
the era in which everyone went out
to play baseball, hockey, etc. Today
we are content with sitting back
and watching the games frim the
sidelines. The fact that Joe Blow is
playing for such and such a team
is insignificant. Instead we are out
to see the real professionals of
sports such as Mickey Mantle,
Frank Mahovolich Arnold Palmer
to name but a few. These are the
professionals.
To most of them sports are a
means of life. Sports give them a
joh with a timely income and for
professionals usually a handsome
income. No longer do we go down
to the arena to see John Smith's
BuUdogs take on the ever. strong
hockey team of the Lazy Lou Gang,
no, instead we go out to see the fa-bu^
ous 50 "goal scorer increase his
prestige over the fans by scoring
three. or four more goals. He is" a
Professional. In ali sports, the re-action
is the same. Professionalism
is the key to sports, some say.
But, let us take a serious look at
the advantages (if any) and the
disadvantages of j)rofessionalism in
sports. Professionalism offers but
two things to the sports minded
person, money and prestige. Many
people entering sports today do so
because of the great f inancial status
which usually adorns professionalism.
To single out but one example,
a hocTcey player on becoming Professional
may make upwards to
$30,000 per year. A baseball player
can go ashigh as $100,000 per year,
and SO on. However^ these substan-tial
yearly incomes are ;the basic
pitfalls to sports. A person who
enters sports for its pecuniary va-lues
only, lack the drive and initia-tive
to succeed. What does he or
she care if they lose a game or
match as long as they receive thfeir
yearly income. Their drive to win
has been somewhat dampered down
in favour of taking it easy and
rolling in easy money as it seems.
Secondly^ prestige may also be ä'
pitfall to sports. As soon as a person
has become a sports celebrity.
the same person may develop a
feeling of superiörity over ali otlier
participants. Would you or I think
of stepping into a ring with Sonny
Liston just for a bit of enjoynfcnt
in sports. He has a name for hiin-self.
I mean to say as ridiculous as,
this example may appear, it is true.
Professionalism also acts as a pitfall
to brilliant young students who
can succeed at university; Today
many students drop out öf school
sports, minor hockey leagues, ama-teur
baseball leagues, just to become
professionals; But is it not
the smaller leagues, teams, school
sports etc, that form the hasis of
our sports of today? What are we
to do when everyone is becoming
Professional? Do we drop ali other
forms of sports? ••:/•.• •."-—•r
Professionalism leads to "snobl>-
ism" and * hero-worshipping." This
definitely should not be. Sports
should remain on a leveleven with
the average person.
Professionalism has very few advantages.
AU a Professional sport
does is "pack in the crowds.'; It is
iae arenas, the football and baseball
fields etc, that benefit directly
from pi-ofessionalism and this benefit
is financial only. Gamblers are
having a field day in Professional
sports, bookies are having a good
inin at the country's finances. So, in
actuality, we are paying dearly for
Professional sports. We pay for ad-mittance
and we also make a wage
on the side; Indirectly professionalism
in sports has lead to a gambling
racket. — P.S. What do the others

They frown now on that type of construction. Its exces sively decorative and expensive. When I first saw it, I thought it was the town Opera-house or at least a theatre. ^ No, there is the Community Club theatre to the right. It's not too ugly either, though of later construction. But it is too small for the town. Why you ask. Don't they pian things ^lere. That is just it. They do. There is going to be a large new Palace of Culture up here on this hill, right behind us. You don't believe it. Weil I do. I-ve seen so much happen in these three years. But first they are taking care of the bread, the cake will come later. But there are biscuits akeady. That building just afront and to the right of the Club is the town Sports Centre. Reallywell equipped too. And right over it to the left you'll see the stadium. Class, eh? It miit finished when we got here, and it wäs äll done by voluntary work (beeSj as we'd call them) we also have left some small marks in its make-up. Now, over to the right still fur-ther. See the water there between those evergreens. Thafs a little lake. Translated its name would be Gamp Lake. Because if you look closely into those trees on the other side, you*ll see some buildings. They are the Children*s äummer Camp. The lake itself is nature's gift to man. Its small and its shallow. Two warm days in spring and its fuU of squirming, squeeling, two-armed, two-legged critters. Without lakes like that there would be mighty little swimming tliis far north (unless they built pools, and still ä pool is never quite the same as a real honest-to-gosh lake.) And on this side of the lake is a beautiful man made sand beach for the older follcs. By the time this appears in print the rehearsals and performances of the Inspector General (for which we hope to haVe a critical analysis in Club Neyvs) will have been completed; Nonetheless the hali will remain a busy place becäuse preparations are being made för the Yritys A.C. annual concert and cabaret dance, scheduled for the weekend of Mar. 17—18. This will be the highlight of the winter's activities so far as "Yritys is concerned. Festivities get under way with a c^haret dance on Saturday, March 16, 9-^12 pm. For the early birds the refreshment bar will open at 8. Feature of the evening will be a floor show based on either a Ha-waiian or Jamaican theme. This is being arranged by womens' gym instructor Dolores Niskanen. So come and dance to the tunefui music of the Annikki Vickman trio. The other two members of this neat coinbo are Mervin and Melvin Manninen. Sunday, March 17 at 4 p.m. is the date and time of the Yritys Annual Concert. This year will be the 57th birthday of Yritys. Guest performers will be the Slovak folk dance group. One of the main attractionswiIl be a big dance production by the Yritys *Rromen called "Finlandia in Abstraot." This is being done in modern dance form and will be of some six minutes duration. Other concert humbers by the Yritys wo-men will include a folk dance, a gay carousel waltz, as well as gym numbers. There will be some child-rens' program and vocal\and .in-strumentai -solos. It is' certafnly'' shaping upto be a very complete and well-balapced concert program. Last Thursday we had a hectic time, but fun, playing Dodge the Ball (it's good for the figure) for about an hour. Then we had fif-teen minutes of warm ups, though I think everyone was pretty well warmed up from dodging around the hali earlier. This was followed'by a brief meeting during which it was decided that ä 10c admission fee will be eharged and that this money will be used to buy shields for the Windows SO that we can start playing basketball. The finishing touches were also put on the Alerts & Visa A.C. Toboggan party. It was short no-tice, granted, but T was really sur-prised to see the number of kids who were out to enjoy themselves, big and little alike. It was held at the Wanup Hall on Sunday af-ternoon, March 2nd. I think everyone had toboggans, skis or flying saucers, and some of the giris even had big sheets of cardboard with which to slide down that steep hill that is a preli^e to the finish line on the ski trail. They claim it wasn't really good sliding wea-ther, but 1 don't know. When I was coming down one of the ski hills, one of my skis must have figured the skiing conditions per-fect because it took of f on its own accord and left me sitting near the top of the hill to watch it glide gracefuUy down. Whitefish. — One of the greatest pastimes of our age is sports. Sports act as a social and cultural link be-tween the nations of the world. Many sports began in the back-woods of pioneer days, and today they may wellbe a national pas-time. In Its beginnings sports offer-ed an outlet in which to enjoy one-self; Everyone participated for the sheer spillsand thrills of recreation-al overtones. No one ever thought of adopting sports as work or as a means of support. However, today, many look upon sports an an active way of' life, as a basic 'job.' The days have long passed since the era in which everyone went out to play baseball, hockey, etc. Today we are content with sitting back and watching the games frim the sidelines. The fact that Joe Blow is playing for such and such a team is insignificant. Instead we are out to see the real professionals of sports such as Mickey Mantle, Frank Mahovolich Arnold Palmer to name but a few. These are the professionals. To most of them sports are a means of life. Sports give them a joh with a timely income and for professionals usually a handsome income. No longer do we go down to the arena to see John Smith's BuUdogs take on the ever. strong hockey team of the Lazy Lou Gang, no, instead we go out to see the fa-bu^ ous 50 "goal scorer increase his prestige over the fans by scoring three. or four more goals. He is" a Professional. In ali sports, the re-action is the same. Professionalism is the key to sports, some say. But, let us take a serious look at the advantages (if any) and the disadvantages of j)rofessionalism in sports. Professionalism offers but two things to the sports minded person, money and prestige. Many people entering sports today do so because of the great f inancial status which usually adorns professionalism. To single out but one example, a hocTcey player on becoming Professional may make upwards to $30,000 per year. A baseball player can go ashigh as $100,000 per year, and SO on. However^ these substan-tial yearly incomes are ;the basic pitfalls to sports. A person who enters sports for its pecuniary va-lues only, lack the drive and initia-tive to succeed. What does he or she care if they lose a game or match as long as they receive thfeir yearly income. Their drive to win has been somewhat dampered down in favour of taking it easy and rolling in easy money as it seems. Secondly^ prestige may also be ä' pitfall to sports. As soon as a person has become a sports celebrity. the same person may develop a feeling of superiörity over ali otlier participants. Would you or I think of stepping into a ring with Sonny Liston just for a bit of enjoynfcnt in sports. He has a name for hiin-self. I mean to say as ridiculous as, this example may appear, it is true. Professionalism also acts as a pitfall to brilliant young students who can succeed at university; Today many students drop out öf school sports, minor hockey leagues, ama-teur baseball leagues, just to become professionals; But is it not the smaller leagues, teams, school sports etc, that form the hasis of our sports of today? What are we to do when everyone is becoming Professional? Do we drop ali other forms of sports? ••:/•.• •."-—•r Professionalism leads to "snobl>- ism" and * hero-worshipping." This definitely should not be. Sports should remain on a leveleven with the average person. Professionalism has very few advantages. AU a Professional sport does is "pack in the crowds.'; It is iae arenas, the football and baseball fields etc, that benefit directly from pi-ofessionalism and this benefit is financial only. Gamblers are having a field day in Professional sports, bookies are having a good inin at the country's finances. So, in actuality, we are paying dearly for Professional sports.
