VtOlK 1ujil v iJ"H}B :m v "V:v'?2ii: ONTARIO'S NURSINGmOME SYSTEM ' oka yEäiiAnW3
By Alex McLennan
At present nursing homes
are not homes but institutions:
sterilefriendlessandlackingin
humanness and warmth where
old people sit and rock stare at
the walls for mostof their day or
are led around by the hand like
small shildren by inadequately
enlightened staff who refer to
them as "dear"
If however you read the
brochure given out by the Mi-nist- ry
of Health of the Pro-vinci- al
Government you will
get an altogether different
picture of the nursing home
system On the outside cover is
a picture of two smiling senior
residents with a pleasant faced
nurse smiling in the backround
thereby giving the impression
that ali is nice and cosy in the
Nursing Homes
Actually the majority of
nursing homes are privately
ovvned mainly by giant corpo--
rations yet one of the benefits
claimed in the government broc- -
hure is that "AH residents have
the opportunity to become
members of the residenfs
council of the home" It is true
resident's councils exist but
they are for the most part
controlled by the Corporation
administrator
Residents are afraid to
complain for fear of reprisals
We hear every day from re-sidents
who phone us (and we
receive from 50 to 60 calls each
week) After stating their
grievances to us by phone or
letter they plead with us not to
devulge their names because of
their fear of reprisals at the
hands of the owners or the ad-ministrator

gether with his staff admit that
such discrimination exists
It is obvious that there is
considerable "political" influ- -
ence at when the province
turns a blind eye to deplorable
conditions which exist in nurs--
ing homes Who then are the
people who wield this inf-luenc- e?
One is a comglomerate
which started in the nursing
home business inl960withan
investment of $ 1 50000 and by
had increased its to
313 "million dollars
One should ask the question
"how does a Corporation
this kind of profit and still give
adequate quality care to its
residents?" THE ANSWER IS
QUITE SIMPLE THEY
DONT
It is not generally knovvn
that the taxpayers of Ontario
are currently pay ing out
through the Ministry of Health
each da-v 7 the sum of —$27 —1 6— jn- e— r- -
bed in addition to the fee
charged to the resident The
citizens of Ontario are thereby
paying out each day to the
corporations who control the
nursing homes in Ontario the
sum of $780000 per day or
over $23 million per month
IF YOU WERE TO BE-COME
DISABLED COULD
YOU BE SURE YOU WOULD
RECEIVE DECENT ANDHU-MAN- E
