Tory campaign tops
Davey s ays
Ottawa (CP) — Prime Minister-elec- t Brian Mulroney's election
campaign was the "finest the slickest—and I don't mean that in a
pejorative sense—that l've ever seen" says Senator Keith Davey
the Liberal campaign chairman
The Progressive Conservatives' landslide win stemmed mainly
from their ability to outflank the Liberals on liberal positions Davey
said in a broadcast interview But he predicted that Mulroney will
follov a more conservative path once in office
The senator also praised opinion polls taken during the
campaign as "startlingly accurate" He rejected calls for a ban on
publishing them during elections
By E Holwell
From the forgoing clipped from the Toronto Star three questions
come to mind
( 1 ) Was Brian Mulroney's election campaign the "finest and the
Slickest"?
(2) Did the Progressive conservatives' landslide win stem mainly
from their ability to outflank the Liberals on liberal positions?
(3) How much influence did the "startlingly accurate" public
opinion polls have on the final results?
About half vvay through the
campaign it seemed fairly
obvious that considerable con-fusi- on
existed among a wide
section of the voting public
Having spent the first two
weeks in Vancouver and Vic-toria
B C this writer met
dozens of people who were
confused and undecided about
vvhich party - which candidate
They could not see any diffe-ren- ce
betvveen Mulroney and
Turner
The first debate on televi-sion
by the three main party
leaders was a lack lustre affair
vvhich as many people express-e- d
it - "seemed to favour the
NDP"
One of the most significant
reports I listened to after re-turn- ing
to Toronto was by
Newscaster Lloyd Robertson

the huge body of undecided

opinion that this barrage was
aimed directly at the very large
sectionof undecided voters - on
the basis that if they cannot
make up their minds we will do
it for them According to the
above by Keith Davey he must
have had objections from many
sources suggesting that Opinion
