Home and Country Fall 2007
Acting President Elect
Zella Pimm, Acting President Elect
M embers how would you like to Celebrate 100 years of Alberta Women’s
Institutes in 2009?
Where, when, and how? All ideas will be considered as Council must have
some plans in place before the AWI Convention in June 2008.
Please send me your ideas soon so we can start to plan for that most special
occasion. Time is important because of the FWIC Convention in June 2009. For the
AWI Convention in June 2008 in Camrose we are asking for designs for a pin and
a plate. Each of you can start your ideas now, and please watch for the President’s
Newsletter for where and when to send them.
If you would like to be on the 100 year party planning committee send me
your name address and phone number.
Please Fax me at 1- 780- 338- 2186
Thank you for your help! wi
I n July, the FWIC Board met in Paris, Ontario for a busy time of workshops, meetings
and tours of the Hoodless Homestead and Erland Lee Museum Home. Both Darlene
Wicks and I attended from Alberta, along with each Society Executive Officer and
President. Updates were given on various projects and some highlights follow:
Into the North, Phase II: This project is being undertaken in a variety
of ways by each province and region. B. C. Women’s Institutes have sent items to some
remote northern communities. Saskatchewan has collected Campbell’s soup labels
which they used for books to send to northern communities. Manitoba is also looking at
northern communities and Ontario has chosen Club Amick, their Lieutenant- Governor’s
literacy initiative for young aboriginal readers in fly- in communities in northern
Ontario. Quebec is in contact with a midwife who goes to a northern community and
is looking for supplies to start a Girl Guide program, and they have also been in touch
with Scholastic Books. The Maritimes have been in contact with a school in Nunavut.
Nunavut is paired with the Legions, so they are also interested in the project, and Newfoundland will be working through
a missionary with a school in Labrador, which is in desperate need of supplies and clothing. They are also fortunate in that
the RCMP will fly articles to the community from St. John’s. What a wonderfully varied way to continue this project on
a more local level! More on our Alberta project can be found elsewhere in Home & Country.
New Member Challenge: A motion was passed at the meeting: That FWIC challenges each province to a
NET gain of 20 members in the triennium in order to obtain a Certificate of Achievement which will be presented at the
FWIC Convention in PEI. I am convinced that in Alberta we can meet and even surpass this challenge!
Peace Garden Shingle Fundraiser: Thank you to those who have already sent in donations. They are
coming in well from across Canada, but it has been discovered that the wood foundation under the shingles also needs
replacing, so please keep this project in mind when you are making your annual branch donations. They should be sent
directly to the FWIC office.
Federated News: In her report, Barbara Sheardown reported that the circulation of 1,100 issues represents
less than 10% of our members! Please subscribe either individually or as a branch so that you can get ideas from other
societies and learn what our national organization is doing. Subscription forms are printed in the magazine.
If you have any questions about FWIC, please contact me and I would be happy to help. wi
