World Trade unionists
DUBLIN — An historic decision among trade
unionists of the world was taken in Liberty Hall here
early this month when delegates from the four corners
of the globe established themselves as the International
Committee of Trade unionists for Peace and Disarma-men- t
Heading up the new World body will be doughty 62-year-- old
James MUne secretary-gener- al of the Scottish
Trade Union Congress Secretary for the body is Brian
Price former president of TASS section of the huge
British General Workers Union
Attending the conference were delegates from Ire-lan- d
Scotland England France Denmark Finland
Iraq Japan India the USA Canada the Soviet Union
Czechoslovakia Bulgaria and Lätin American coun-trie- s
Several unions from Africa Asia and South
America that have supported the movement toward
establishing this world-wid- e working-clas-s committee
were not at the conference but had previously indicated
their agreement with the idea Included in this group
were Australia and New Zealand which have given
vigorous assistance to the committee's formation Also
present were member unions of the ICFTU the WFTU
and ICATU (International Confederation of Arabic
Trade Unions)
Ray Stevenson former officer and Organizer of both
the Mine Mill and Smelter Workers and the United
Steehvorkers in Canada said that the development was
the result of several important trends and activities
among world trade unionists on the peace front
"In part the genesis of this new committee can be
traced to the movements for Conversion to peace-tim- e
industry that grew up so strongly in Great Britain during
the mid-197- 0s he said "The policies developed by the
Trade Union Commission of the World Peace Council
during the same period was another step These policies
met with great successes at the Round Table of World
Trade Unionists in Sofia at the World Parliament of the
Peoples for Peace
"There we had trade unions and unionists from more
than 70 countries ali continents and of widely varying
ideologjcal political economic and social pointsof view
and systems" Stevenson pointed out "However they
were able to agree unanimously that regardless of what
other differences there might be the rising war danger
and the immense waste and damage on ali economies
everywhere brought on by the escalating war prep--

Ironically the conference found itself opposition to
the February statement on foreign affairs issued by the
AFL-CI- O to the effect that the US economy can pro-du- ce
both "guns and butter' This the committee sees as
absurd It is seen as a direct contribution to the public
stance of the Reagan Pentagon Weinburger Haig
policies of war and belligerence and their dri ve for world
military domination It is ironic because the AFL-CI- O is
one of the last remaining trade union centres the world
that openly supports US -- Nato military and arms
investment and expenditure
