Vera J. Pierce 1907- 2006 The Pine Lake Women's Institute Branch was saddened by the death of Vera Jennette Pierce on January 26, 2006 at age 98 years. Mrs. Pierce was a Charter and Branch Life Member with a long and outstanding service. She had 26 years of perfect attendance. She served at the various branch and constituency levels. She excelled in penmanship as exemplified in the hand wntten branch programs and branch history. Ada Newton of Haden QCW, Queensland, Australia became her pen pal in 1963 and this pen friendship continued until Ada's death in 1999. Vera was bom May 4, 1907on the family homestead west of Didsbury, Alberta, the youngest daughter of Walter Guy and Mary Jane Houston. She took her schooling in Red Deer and excelled in sports. She was a member of the highly successful Red Deer Amazons Women * s Hockey Team. Vera Pierce graduated from Camrose Normal School and taught in rural schools. She came to the Pine Lake area as the neighbouring Grassy Lake School teacher. Here she met Eric Pierce to whom she was married in 1936. Together on their farm they raised two daughters and two sons. Vera was supportive in her community and active in the Holy Trinity Church and Sunday School, Community Organization and Ghost Pine 40+ Club. She enjoyed art classes and her travels with her husband. She was predeceased by her husband of 69 years in August 2005. She wdl be lovingly remembered by all her children, ten grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
