M a d a m P r e s i d e n t a n d L a d i e s of t h e A l b e r t a W o m e n ' s I n s t i t u t e s:
W h i l e our D i s t r i c t N o . 4 comes last o n t h e l i s t , we b y no means conside ourselves
of a n y less i m p o r t a n c e t h a n the other d i s t r i c t s . There are a b o u t e i g h t y - f o ur
I n s t i t u t e s i n D i s t r i c t N o . 4, w i t h a n . a p p r o x i m a t e membership of 2,500, a n d I have
been much pleased l a t e l y i n n o t i n g i n the I n s t i t u t e items i n the papers of new
I n s t i t u t e s being formed and I n s t i t u t e s r e - o r g a n i z i n g . A n d I must acknowledge
right here t h a t the first t h i n g I l o o k f o r i n a paper is t h e I n s t i t u t e news, also h a v e I
h e a r d other women voice the same sentiments. U n d o u b t e d l y t h e y are a great
assest i n e n c o u r a g i n g the general r e a d i n g of newspapers.
I n p r e s e n t i n g a r e p o r t of D i s t r i c t N o . 4, I h a v e been d i r e c t e d t o g i v e p a r t i c u l ar
a t t e n t i o n to our D i s t r i c t Conference, t h a t the other D i s t r i c t s m a y k n o w of t h e i m mense
value we receive f r om t h i s . Nevertheless I feel I must t o u c h o n the C o n s
t i t u e n c y Conferences I h a d the p r i v i l e g e of a t t e n d i n g last f a l l . Perhaps it was
t h a t b e i n g m y first t e rm as D i r e c t o r I was the more impressed, but to me i t seemed
tremendous what was b e i n g a c c o m p l i s h e d . Since a t t e n d i n g those Conferences our
O r g a n i z a t i o n i n m y m i n d seems s i m p l y glorified. That we s h o u l d a t t e m p t so
m u c h is w o n d e r f u l , but t h a t so m u c h s h o u l d be accomplished is more wonderful
y e t . Each successive Conference I a t t e n d e d was as s p l e n d i d as t h e last one; and
i m p r e s s i n g the s i n c e r i t y of the workers u p o n m y m i n d was t h e fact t h a t each C o n s
t i t u e n c y had its separate i n d i v i d u a l i t y , i t s d i s t i n c t line. I w o u l d l o v e to give
y o u i t em for i t em what each I n s t i t u t e has done, but t h a t w o u l d be a H e r c u l e an
t a s k a n d after a l l ' t w o u l d be b u t an o f t - t o l d s t o r y , so I s h a l l j u s t give y o u t h e outs
t a n d i n g feature of each C o n s t i t u e n c y as t h e y impressed me w h i l e a t t e n d i n g the
Conferences.
P i n e h e r Creek and R o c k y M o u n t a i n C o n s t i t u e n c i e s have accomplished a
r e c o r d of t i e e a r l y days of t h e i r d i s t r i c t . M r s . H a m m o n d is C o n v e n e r.
T a b e r u n d e r the C o n v e n e r s h i p of M r s . A n d e r s o n , has waged a successful c a m p a i gn
to " U s e M o r e M i l k . "
T h e C a r d s t o n C o n s t i t u e n c y , M r s . K e l l e y , Convener, has encouraged the
p l a n t i n g of gardens, and has made a s t u d y of " O u r F l a g . " Last summer their
G i r l s ' C l u b s h a d a d e l i g h t f u l c a m p at W a t e r t o n L a k e s.
T h e W a r n e r C o n s t i t u e n c y , M r s . G r a h a m , Convener, is k e e n l y a l i v e , at their
Conference t h e y h a d a wonderful d i s p l a y of n e e d l e w o r k w h i c h i n c l u d e d a B l u e b i rd
q u i l t of a n u n i q u e a n d most a r t i s t i c design.
M e d i c i n e H a t C o n s t i t u e n c y under the C o n v e n e r s h i p of M r s . B e l l a m y , is also
i n t e n s e l y active, t h e y are s u p p o r t i n g the P u b l i c H e a l t h N u r s e i n her w o r k . The
w o r k of t h e i r S t a n d i n g C o m m i t t e e s is p a r t i c u l a r l y well o r g a n i z e d a n d f u n c t i o n i ng
i n a l l i t s branches.
T h e R e d c l i f f C o n s t i t u e n c y , M r s . R o b s o n , Convener, has been c o n t e n d i n g w i th
the result of adverse seasons b u t t h e y are d o i n g wonderful w o r k a l o n g s o c i a l lines
a n d i n h e l p i n g t h e needy.
B o w V a l l e y , M r s . D a v i e s , C o n v e n e r , is o r g a n i z e d on m o d e l fines w i t h a l l c o m m
i t t e e s f u n c t i o n i n g p e r f e c t l y . T h e y seem p a r t i c u l a r l y f a v o r e d i n t h a t C o n s t i t u e n cy
w i t h m u s i c a l t a l e n t.
T h e G l e i c h e n C o n s t i t u e n c y , M r s . F u l t o n , C o n v e n e r , i s most a c t i v e , as we m ay
k n o w f r om t h e I n s t i t u t e news we see i n the papers.

m a n y enjoyable exchange v i s i t s , also t h e y h a v e h a d addresses f r om n o t a b l e speakers.
L i t t l e B o w C o n s t i t u e n c y , M r s . A l c o c k , C o n v e n e r , is t o be c o m m e n d e d u p o n the
excellence of t h e w o r k of t h e i r S t a n d i n g C o m m i t t e e s . Some s p l e n d i d papers have
been p r e p a r e d b y t h e i r chairmen.
I n the M a c l e o d a n d C l a r e s h o lm C o n s t i t u e n c i e s t h e y have done s p l e n d i d comm
u n i t y service, i n one p a r t i c u l a r I n s t i t u t e b y engaging a m u s i c teacher ( at a cost of
$ 300 per year to the I n s t i t u t e ) for t h e benefit of t h e school c h i l d r e n . The t o w n of
M a c l e o d has extended an i n v i t a t i o n t o the D i s t r i c t t o h o l d t h e next D i s t r i c t C o n ference
there.
N o w in s u m m i n g up the impressions received while a t t e n d i n g these
C o n s t i t u e n c y Conferences, I find first of all, t h a t the general c o n d i t i o n of the
I n s t i t u t e s i n any C o n s t i t u e n c y depends p r i m a r i l y u p o n the Convener, and I
t a k e m u c h pleasure i n c o m m e n d i n g D i s t r i c t N o . 4 u p o n the number of s p l e n d i d ly
capable conveners t h r o u g h o u t the entire d i s t r i c t . Secondly, we are c o m i n g more
