Holly Hallett, one of the charter members of the Jackson W. I., died of cancer last week. She was 64. Hallet was a long standing member of the W. I , joining up with Jackson after she and her family moved to the Carstairs area in 1951. Noreen Olson, another member of the Jackson W. I. and a friend of Hallet's, said she was deeply committed to W. I. and to her family. " There wasn't much she couldn't do," Olson said. " She was capable, bright hard working and obviously courageous. She put a lot of energy into her work with the W I , but she was also a very good mother, grandmother and wife. Home and family were very important to her." Hallet was president of Alberta W. I. from lQ90 to 1993. Tragically, she is the second president A. W. I has lost to cancer Shirley Ann Hammer of Olds, u ho was supposed to take over the presidency this year, died in 1993. Olson said while their deaths were a blow to friends and family, the years they were involved in W. I made a difference. " Holly was one of the most organized people I have ever met," Olson said. " And a very, very intelligent person with a good business sense. Under her leadership, the A. W. I is more business- like than every before." Both Olson and Hallet's daughter- in- law Darlene, said the founding principles of W. I. were very important to Holly. " She really enjoyed the organization because it is a group whose major focus is on education and awareness," said Darlene " She really enjoyed things that were worthwhile." " She was always on top of cur-rent issues," said Olson. " We had Holly Belle Hallett died of cancer August 11,1994, at the age of 64. Holly was AWI President from 1990 to 1993, and was on the AWI Council for 12 years. Her accomplishments during those years included chairing the pornography awareness program, implementing the Alberta Rural Child Care Pilot Project with the Government of Alberta, acting as a member of the Environment Council of Alberta, leading Leadership Training Programs, and taking part in strategic planning for the Alberta Home Economics Department. She was also a board member with the Federated Women's Institutes of Canada ( FWIC) from 1987 to 1993. Holly was an active volunteer in her local Carstairs community. With husband Bob, she raised six children and worked the family farm. To all her activities. Holly brought not only her keen intelligence and business sense, but also her warmth and respect for others. Between four and five hundred friends and relatives attended Holly's memorial service in Madden. Many more friends across the country and around the world will miss her. Holly was a most capable and courageous woman, and leaves a lasting legacy with the organization she worked so hard for - Alberta Women's Institutes. Thank you. Holly, and farewell. some great discussion. She knew all about the important issues day to day and no detail was too small for her." Olson also said it was Holly's leadership which helped to get the Rural Childcare Project rolling. She is also credited with supporting the leadership programs at Gold Eye Camp and the W. I.' s support of the Alberta Coalition Against Pornography. Besides her work with W. I., Hallet was also actively involved with the family farm and her 6 children. Darlene said Hallet was actively involved in the Carstairs community, volunteering for several events and organizations. But besides her family, Olson said there are friends all over the world who will mourn her loss. " She travelled quite extensively with W. I. and I know there are people all over who consider her a friend." A memorial service will be held for Hallet today at 2pm at the Madden Community Centre.
