Shirk1* an Hammer, 1st vice president
of AWI, passed away May 1, 1993 in
Olds. Shirleyan was a devoted AWI member,
and a woman of many accomplishments.
She belonged to the Coburn WI,
and over the years held all branch positions.
She was constituency convener for
the Olds constituency, provincial resolutions
chair, and 2nd and 1st vice presidents.
It was Shirleyan who coordinated
ihe very successful Communicate with
Confidence workshops, represented AWI
in several organizations including the.
Council on Ageing, served on the FWIC
finance committee, and was a voting delegate
at two ACWW conferences.
Besides her committment to WI,
Shirleyan was treasurer of the Olds food
bank, w as active in Eastern Star, served on
the United Church board, and was recently
appointed to the National Advisory
Council on the Status of Women.
She is remembered in part by her fellow
WI members for her gift of music; at
the piano, she would liven up many a long
evening at conferences and workshops.
Shirleyan's contributions to WI were
many; she will be greatly missed and long
remembered.

says Education Convener, Marilyn
Wattenbarger. Societal problems
will only be solved by the
collective strength of all corporate
and private citizens. Women's
Institutes, as an educational organization,
will continue to play a
key role.
Minute reports re: Social Service,
Environment, International
Affairs, Agriculture, Health and
Handicraft were also presented.
Branch projects: a successful
coffee party, June 2; sponsoring
three local farmers' markets, to
date; beautifying the " WI" corner
with petunia plants; attendance
at the annual AWI Provincial
Convention by one full- time member
and four part- time members.
Congratulations to Doris
Northey elected as president elect
to the Alberta Women's Institutes.
Sixteen handicraft articles
were in the AWT Handicraft display.
15 articles placed first, one
second. Marion Brown received
the outstanding General Award
for her mukluks. Kathleen Lawrence
was the recipient of the
Birks lucky draw gift.
Upcoming summer projects:
Sponsorship of the Handicraft
Section of the Pine Lake Agricultural
Fair with the purchase of a
$ 15 gift; continuation of the jelly
project if fruit juice is available;
August tour and lunch at Macintosh
House in Red Deer.
The branch received three
mementos from the late Mrs.
Annie Allen: a piggy bank, WI bell
and plate. These articles will be
used at branch functions.
Roll call was answered by
naming an artist and his/ her particular
talent.
