Twelve members and three
guests attended the 35th Anni­versary
of Pine Lake WI. Five
charter members were present—
Marion Brown, Doris Warke, Vera
Pierce, Ella Sawyer, and Prei da
Bragg.
Public Health and Advisory
Board have refused the appeal to
keep the regional landfill from
going in at the headwaters of Pine
Lake. We are frustrated, disap­pointed
and disillusioned that they
have given approval to build a
landfill at this site.
AWI is studying the water sys­tems
of Alberta. Each of the eight
branches will make a map of the
waterways of their area, listing
industries and environmental
concerns. The branches will put
the maps together in the fall, to
give an overview of the entire Red
Deer Centre Constituency. This
will provide a complete province-wide
study as each constituency
submits its own area study.
Handicraft Tea was held in Red
Deer, April 20.
' Let us celebrate ACWW Day a
week early'— words of Marion
Brown who chaired the evening of
April 21, at the United Church in
Olds wherein our Nicaraguan
guests were entertained and re­ciprocated
with accounts of farm
life in their country. A potluck
supper was served followed by
presentations and interaction in
the evening.
Marion Brown will be our dele­gate
to the May 3 Constituency
Conference.
Pine Lake Coffee Party will be
held at the Hub Community
Centre, June 5,9: 30- 1 lajn. There
will be plant and bake sale tables.
The 10th Anniversary of the
new hall at the Hub Community
Centre will be celebrated, June
22. Pioneer resident Annie Allen,
turned the first sod for the hall,
June 17, 1981.
Program for the meeting was
provided by Lillie Clutton who
showed a selection of slides suit­able
to the occasion. For everyone
present the slides recalled many
memories of past members, cf WI
activities and programs and of

Dorothy Herbert won first
place award for highest points in
handicraft in the over 80 cate­gory
at the Red Deer Centre Con­stituency
Handicraft Competition.
Handicraft convener Lillie Clut­ton
presented the award to Mrs.
Herbert on behalf of Constituency
Handicraft convener Eva Wadey.
Annie Allen, 93, received a first
place ribbon for a framed hand­worked
picture.
Delegate to the Constituency
Conference Marion Brown noted
that Trudy Carson chaired an
excellent conference. Doris
Northey reported that the WI
Handicraft Exhibit at the museum
is being very well received by the
people. " It is a feather in the
museum's hat!"
Pine Lake and Hillsdown will
work together on the Waterways
Project.
Several members attended the
Penhold WI meeting where guest
speaker was Beryl Brown, daugh­ter-
in- law of Newfoundland WI
president.
The Pine Lake branch will con­tinue
the jelly project; however will
not take part in the Fall Parkland
Mall Bazaar.
A group class of five articles
wilV be entered at the Red Deer
Fair.
Pine Lake WI will sponsor the
Needlecraft Category of the
Crossroads Agricultural Soci­ety
Fair held in conjunction with
Pine Lake Hub Community
Centre, August 9, 10, 11, 1991.
The Provincial Convention:
June 10- 13, will be held at the
Olds College. Delegate, Doris
Warke will take with her the
members' decisions on the resolu­tions.
Marion Brown reported on the
meeting held in Olds with two
farm ladies from Nicaragua.
Mart a Valle works with the
women's section of Nicaragua's
National Union of Farmers
and Ranchers, representing
more than 125,000 farmers. She
and Haydee Rodriguez, also of
the UNAG, recently toured parts
of rural Canada in exchange with
the National Farmers Union.
They told of the farmer's
struggle over land and of growing
food for their families. They were
overnight guests of Roy and Mar­ion
Brown therefore having the
opportunity to see an Alberta farm
first hand and to learn more about
farm life here.
The program was given by
Edna Whittimore, education con­vener,
who gave an overview of
education in the USA and in Can-aaa.

George Bush has a program to
have hundreds of new experimen­tal
schools and to establish a sys­tem
of national examinations for
students.
Goals include efforts to ensure
that every child be fit and healthy
enough to start school and that
students in all levels be compe­tent
in such course subjects an
English, Mathematics, Science,
History and Geography. " For the
sake of the future of our children
and our nation, we must trans­form
our schools," Bush told the
Americans.
In Ottawa some critics of
Canada's education system called
for a similar commitment to im­prove
education from the federal
government and the provinces.
A Prime Ministerial task force
has cited inadequate education
and training as one of the great­est
threats to Canada's productiv­ity.
The Conference Board of Can­ada
has held a two- day conference
to discuss improving the school

Red Deer Home Economist
Lynn Stegman and Assistant
Home Economist Margo Lawrence
presented the program under the
topics: 1. Safety in handling pesti­cides.
2. Guidelines of healthy
eating. 3. Food safety issues. 4.
Financial planning. 5. Communi­cations.
The coffee party was well at­tended
and enjoyed by everyone.
Lettie Newman won the door
prize. The quilt display was well
received. Doris Warke was the
delegate to the Olds Convention.
Dr. Ellen McLean was the guest
speaker.
The Liberian Project received
$ 44.45 as a special donation from
Pine Lake WI. The Liberian Proj­ect
is a new ACWW project to raise
$ 5,216 for training and equipment
which can be used to improve the
nutritional and financial status of
women and their families in an
\ area which has a high rate of
malnutrition. ACWW regards this
program as a pilot development in
an entirely new area where little
has been done to help women's
groups.
Roll call was frivolous but fun:

President Gayle Olson pre­sented
Jean Miller with a fare­well
gift. Jean and her husband
Don are moving back to Calgary.
Pine Lake WI has been fortunate
to have Jean as a member. We
