f o r m e d i n 1 9 2 0 I Ladies celebrate 70th at Penhold
What better way to start off the season than with a
celebration.
That's what the ladies were up to last Saturday
when they marked the 70th anniversary of the Red
Deer Centre Women's Institute Constituency in
Penhold's Memorial Hall.
For it was in Penhold, Oct. 3,
1920, that the constituency, later
to embody a dozen Wl Chapters,
was formed.
Significantly, Penhold had one
of the best halls in the district. It
was completed and dedicated in
1919 as an eloquent tribute to all
area residents who had served in
the Great War.
One of the first chapters in the
constituency, Penhold WI was
headed for many years by community
force Mrs. Elsie MacDou-gall,
a distant relative of the
chapter's current president, Mrs.
Donna Serres.
It was a case where a- modest
number of determined women
caused construction of something •
well done, needed and whose use
has steadily- increased over the
years. You might say a typical
WI legacy from the times.
Showing up for the
constituency's inauguration were
36 members, from all points of the
" County.
Observed in the same hall with
increasing numbers of celebrants
were the 25th and 50th anniversaries
of the constituency's founding.
This time, 78 members were
greeted by Mrs. Serres, past constituency
convener, Mrs. Grace
Grover, and special guest Mrs.
Shirley Ann Hammer, first vice-president
of Alberta Women's
Institute.
A feature of the afternoon's
proceedings was presentation of
" The Red Deer Centre WI Constituency
70th Anniversary
History Book" prepared by Mrs.
Ethel Morrisroe and Mrs. Agnes
Richards.
Receiving the book on behalf of
the Red Deer Museum and Archives
was Mrs. Doris Northey,
a former constituency convener
and cultural history programmer
for the Museum. Mrs. Morrisroe
is also a former president of Alberta
WI.
A pageant entitled " The Hour
Has 70 Years" rounded out the
gala.
