1957 EVENTS AND HIGHLIGHTS ( Continued) The members were r e q u i r e d to pay 1$ f o r each i n c h of w a i s t l i n e the month of t h e ir b i r t h d a y . The payment of Mrs. D. Lawrence was c o n s i d e r a b l y i n c r e a s e d as the b i r t h of her son occurred j u s t i n time to f o r c e her absence from the p i c n i c at Lakesend Resort. This was our f i r s t W. I. baby. A r e g u l a r i t y , p u n c t u a l i t y and m i s c e l l a n e o u s point system was arranged. Members were a b l e to g a i n or lose p o i n t s by doing e x t r a work or n e g l e c t i n g a duty, such as a minute r e p o r t . The l a d i e s w i t h the fewest p o i n ts were o b l i g e d to do the s e r v i n g at our annual supper. Mrs. J . L. Sawyer was the member w i t h the h i g h e s t number of p o i n t s. We framed our C h a r t e r t h i s year. At one of our meetings our program was a l i v e l y debate on C e n t r a l i z a t i o n of s c h o o l s . Mrs. J . Dreeshen and Mrs. J. C. Warke were " pro", Mrs. R. L. Brown and Mrs. D. A. Lawrence were " con." In other programs, the l e g al s t a t u s of women was d i s c u s s e d and a l s o the High School " drop out problem. Mrs. E. P i e r c e was our delegate to Farm Women's week at Olds, in August. This was her f i r s t h o l i d a y s i n c e she had been m a r r i e d and r e p o r t e d a very good time. She was most impressed w i t h a t a l k about w i l l s . Mrs. P i e r ce a l s o heard t a l k s on how to dress s u i t a b l y f o r v a r i o u s o c c a s s i o n s . She enjoyed h e a r i n g about how to f u r n i s h a house. She saw demonstrated, an e l e c t r o n i c s t o v e. Mrs. Pierce d i d not recommend eggs cooked t h i s way. One of our more i n t e r e s t i n g r o l l c a l l s was - What I would do w i th a 2 5 t h hour. For another r o l l c a l l , we each donated one green c o f f e e mug, to b u i l d up our supply of mugs to use at our s o c i a l g a t h e r i n g s. Our average attendance was 12^ and v i s i t o r attendance was 4£. Our t r e a s u r e r r e p o r t e d t h a t we had earned $ 275.55 d u r i n g the year. We were q u i t e p l e a s e d w i t h o u r s e l v e s when we were a b l e to pay the expenses f or our two delegates i n Edmonton and Olds. A s u r p r i s e F a r e w e l l p a r t y was held at the home of Mrs. J . Dreeshen f o r Mrs. E t h e l Beck, i n September 1957, who was l e a v i n g f o r Red Deer. A f t e r v a i n l y t r y i n g to get Mrs. Beck to c u r l her h a i r and change her dress, Gordon and I s a b e l l e Beck, on some b u s i n e s s p r e t e x t , brought her to Dreeshen's as she was with them f o r the evening. Upon a r r i v a l of other company, Mrs. Beck u n s u c c e s s f u l l y t r i e d to persuade her f a m i l y t o take her home. She f e a r e d they were " c r a s h i n g a p a r t y ". F o l l o w i n g r e a l i z a t i o n t h a t the p a r t y was i n her honor, Mrs. Beck enjoyed the games and contests t h a t followed, as much as the r e s t of us. B e f o r e c o f f e e , Mrs. R. T. B e c k i n g s a l e presented Mrs. Beck w i t h a W. I. spoon and the good wishes of us a l l . Mrs. J . C. Warke
