1961 EVENTS ( Continued) Our annual H o r t i c u l t u r a l Show was held August 2 5 t h at Pine Lake. Mrs. J . Warke had a headache t h a t day when she d i s c o v e r e d t h a t the D i s t r i ct A g r i c u l t u r a l i s t was unable to come to judge the g r a i n s . Mrs. Warke p r e v a i l e d upon some l o c a l gentleman to do t h i s j u d g i n g . Mrs. D. Smith won the i n d i v i d u a l p r i ze and K e i t h Graham won the c h i l d r e n ' s p r i z e . The f a m i l y p r i z e went to L l o y d Graham's. Mrs. E. P i e r c e contacted Mrs. O l i v e Munroe of Red Deer, to come out. She showed us s l i d e s and gave an i n t e r e s t i n g t a l k on the " Far North and i t s P e o p l e . " Mrs. Munroe had some b e a u t i f u l h a n d i c r a f t a r t i c l e s made by Eskimos on d i s p l a y. In September, we held our meeting at Pine Lake s c h o o l and had Dr. White, D e n t i s t from the Red Deer H e a l t h U n i t as our guest speaker. He spoke on F l u o r i d a t i o n and how important i t i s t o our c h i l d r e n ' s t e e t h from b i r t h to twelve years of age. In October, we had the p r i v i l e g e of s i n g i n g " Happy B i r t h d a y " to our o l d e s t member, Mrs. R. P i e r c e . She c e l e b r a t e d her 88 b i r t h d a y . We had as a guest at one of our meetings Mrs. A. Brock, a member of the newly formed Canadian A s s o c i a t i o n of Consumers, i n Red Deer. Mrs. Brock e x p l a i n e d C. A. C. and i t s aims. Mrs. R. C l u t t o n has s i n c e attended meetings of t h i s group i n Red Deer. We have a l s o taken out a group membership. In November, Mrs. R. Brown, Canadian I n d u s t r i e s and A g r i c u l t u re convenor, gave us an i n t e r e s t i n g t a l k on the tour t h a t Mrs. J . Sawyer, Mrs. E. P i e r c e, h e r s e l f and t h e i r husbands took through the new Wheat Pool B u i l d i n g i n C a l g a r y. A r m i s t i c e Day i s a l s o the b i r t h d a y of our member, Mrs. B. A l l e n. We answered our December r o l l c a l l w i t h an a r t i c l e f o r a Christmas hamper to be d i s t r i b u t e d i n the Red Deer d i s t r i c t . Mrs. J . Warke gave the h i g h l i g h t s of our W. I. supper. Our branch s p l u r g e d and bought a ham and t u r k e y f o r our supper. Mrs. D. Lawrence and Mrs. D. Smith cooked these items and the rest of the l a d i e s s u p p l i e d v e g e t a b l e s , r o l l s , salads and p i e s . The gayest time had was when Mrs. B. A l l e n presented her c o n t e s t . This was a r e l a y race i n which she gave each r e l a y a b a l l of wool. The idea was f o r one person to rewind the wool and then pass i t on to the next. Of course, our husbands d i d a l i t t l e c h e a t i n g i n i t . Our branch has decided t o h o l d a dance a month throughout the w i n t e r . In November we paid f o r h a v i n g the piano tuned i n the Pine Lake Community c e n t r e. Our r o l l c a l l i n February was come d r e s s e d as the Queen of H e a r t s. Mrs. E. P i e r c e and Mrs. B. A l l a n took the honors. E a r l y i n the year when Mrs. D. Lawrence, Sunshine Convenor, was a s k i n g f o r s u g g e s t i o n s when the l a d i e s were i n the h o s p i t a l , Mrs. J . Dreeshen, mother of two boys, s a i d she would l i k e a g i r l . Our l a r g e s t income was on the v a r i e t y c o n c e r t s , which earned us $ 1 0 1 . 0 5 . Expenses i n c l u d e d c o n v e n t i o n d e l e g a t e s , h o r t i c u l t u r a l show, d o n a t i o ns to cancer, and the a r t h r i t i s fund. Our average attendance was 11 3/ 4 and v i s i t o r s attendance was 1^. Mrs. Woodrow, C o n s t i t u e n c y convenor was a s p e c i a l v i s i t o r. Mrs. L. Dawson
